Matlock also mostly played a Ric - and wore some fancy shirts, which might have been why Malcolm McClaren felt threatened, and replaced him with someone more malleable.
Cool! I gotta say the bass sounds pretty dark to me, but maybe it's my headphones. Thanks for the link!
The fancy shirts were indeed a problem. But Pistols singer John Lydon (aka "Johnny Rotten") was most annoyed by Matlock's oversized cargo shorts, big, American-style white tennis shoes and ubiquitous Fender Custom Shop hat, none of which conveyed the desired punk image. In fact, early rock press reviews from inkies Sounds and NME mocked Matlock as looking like "Some bloody Talk Bass tool," much to Lydon's deep chagrin.
Matlock's days were numbered from that point on.
Which, ironically, pretty much nails a lot of Jah Wobble's get-ups...

I second this!
Good punk bassists play good punk basses. It doesn't matter, that's the whole point of real punk music, you do what you like.
If I had to pick, every good punk rocker seems to have had a p bass out front. Just sayin'.
Another consideration is weight... ya might want to just get a solid old, 10+ lb Gibson or something similar... good for taking hits, and giving if necessary...
They called it quits last night..
Slip was great, as was Rival Schools first album - but neither they, nor Unsane were punk bands, so none of these great bands help the OP's quest![]()
I might be slightly unfair, it's been a long time, but I remember two 7" records and a song or two on another 7" split with someone else and they blew me away, but the only songs that I *really* liked to Slip were the ones I'd previously heard. I'm really going back in time, here, but I swear I'd heard Fazer before Slip was released? I'm gonna have to go slop through my pile of old records now.
I also didn't care for whatever the band that came after Quicksand was, I apologize I don't recall their name but I didn't discover them til a couple years back and my tastes changed a lot.
I took some time with the new album today, needs more attention. Maybe I should go back and give Manic Compression another listen too, but I remember being really disappointed by that.
Manic Compression sucks. New record is ok, but missing Tom Cappone (hopefully he's getting the help he needs with his addiction which is what led him leaving the tour last year and forcing the rest of the guys to tour as a 3-piece), but I think it's always been an issue for him and the band, which is why they recorded that new record as a 3-piece. Either way, they were pretty darn unique during their heyday, and nobody really sounded like them, punk or not. who cares. They were pretty amazing.
