Got SRX?

Hello srx know it alls:-)

I'm in the market for my 1st propper bass. I'm loving the slender Ibanez necks, and I have a oppertynity to get a srx 530, which looks awesome. However I may not be able to test it before I buy. I'm a bit biased on the active/passive issue and really not experienced enough to really know what I preffer. So my question, is the bass/treble boost/cut a switch between active and passive, making the srx possible to play either way? If so, how does it play in passive mode? Or have I completely misunderstood the controls?

Andrklet, you're looking at a bass with a 2 band EQ. The bass is active-only, and has no passive feature. The bass & treble knobs will change your bass or treble from those two knobs. A 9 volt battery is required for use.

Ok, thanks. Like I said I'm probably not going to be able to test the srx before buying. And I've tried a few actives now, and some of them I really did not like. I did try one Ibanez which I did like very much, and I'm trying a sr305 in the next couple of days. Is there any comparison between that and the srx? Will I be digging the srx if the sr sounds right to me? Gratefull for any feedback.

These can be made active/passive with a push/pull Vol pot (just a preamp bypass).
I have that setup on one SRX705 with an Aguilar OBP 3TK/PP and with Dean Markley round-core nickel rounds. Sounds great both ways.
The other SRX705 is stock setup with Webstring's s/s flats- smooth, low action, and sound great with or without a pick. this'll get a push/pull active/passive switch soon, also.
Had one SRX500 and two SRX505's, which played great, but just prefer the SRX705's tone more- maybe due to the alnico pickups?
Also, there's the bolt-on/ thru-neck difference...
I'll have to get some more photos up soon.

That is a mighty fine collection you have there JustForSport! I see you have some sr's too. Like I sad previously, I'm concidering a srx, which I'll probably won't be able to try before buying. I've tried a couple of sr's which I liked very much, but perhaps a little too controlled an pretty sounding if you know what I mean? I'm new to this an what I'm looking for is the feel of the Ibanez thin neck and relative low weight. Sounds wise, I suppose a j-bass. I tried a fender modern jazz, which sounded good. Much like a standard us j, but with more power. And I'm kinda hoping the srx will give me some of that. Ibanez feel and a powerfully j-bass sound. I'm I on the right path? :-)

Thanks- The necks are thin front-to-back but the 5'ers are significantly wider that the 4 I had, and the SR506 is wider, still.
From what I've read, the SRX's have wider string spacing and the necks are a little beefier than the SR's. All stable in my experience.
The alnico humbuckers, while aggressive and seem wider range with more lows avail than the ceramics, have a little bit smoother sound than single-coil or split coil pickups can, probably because of the wider aperture (sensing area). Nickel plated steel stings get me more growl and definition than others (some more, some less), and the rig they're coupled to can make a huge diff in the tone avail.
I wasn't able to try any of these before I bought, either, and the SR506 was my first, so at that time I didn't know how to assess what I was looking at, altho the seller played it. The SR506 has split coil pickups, more smooth-sounding like you mentioned (could be the pre),and I was going to replace it with an Aguilar OBP 3PPK, but hat got put into a Hohner B-BassVI that had a bad pre- sounds great, now.
Haven't had or played a Jazz, so can't make a comparison.
Even tho the SRX pre is a 2-band, I still get the mids by cutting the bass and treble some and boosting the volume.
As always, best to 'try before you buy', but that's not always an option...
Hope this helps in your choice.

Thanks a lot for your answer! Sorry for my late response. Late is a key word here. The SRX was sold, before I could decide. I got to test a Fender MP Jazz, and loved it, so I bought it. But I´m still intrigued by the SRX, so I might join your club at some later stage. Beautiful basses!

Stumbled across this dead thread while I was researching on this bass I picked up yesterday. Figure it's worth stirring up again since nobody has posted a picture of a pearl white SRX470 yet.

Was badly set up when I got it (used) but plays and sounds beautiful now. And for $200 it's not half bad lookin' either. :smug:

I wanna get an SRX. So yesterday I testplayed an SRX 530. A bit light for my taste and the pots seemed a bit flimsy, but other than that I really liked it. Very nice handling and look.

Brought my VTDI with me which works really well with my SR 300 DX (with the "phat eq" turned all the way "down"), but I couldn't get a good sound with the SRX on the fly. Is the output signal of the SRX' active humbuckers just too hot for the VTDI? Seemed to get better when I cut both pickups.

(PS: I actually wanna get the SRX 360, but it seems to me that the only difference to the SRX 530 is the pick guard and the body. 530 is ash, 360 is mahagony. So I'm hoping that the 360 is heavier.)

2003 SRX500 I scored 2nd hand a week or so ago. Settling in well and getting used to the tone, I've gotten so used to the SR's with the Bartolinis and 3-band EQ that these pickups and 2-band EQ are taking some re-adjusting to. Its a pretty nice bass though!! Scored it for a nice price too, the Ibanez resale value curse may suck when you want to move one yourself but it makes getting a steal like this very easy. Its so loud! I think I need to lower the pickups a little bit lol.
