Grammy's...sucked?!

I'm not normally one for excuses but... I would never ever have watched it if the person I was with didn't want to.

At least Stevie had a real Clavinet on stage for Superstitious and actually funked out on it. Looking for positives here. Unfortunately one or more of the Disney boys didn't rehearse the tune.

I was thinking, do any small bands ever get nominated, even if they are amazingly awesomely talented, creative musicians?!? Just curious to know how much of a popularity contest this is.

In short? A complete popularity contest. The Oscars very often don't throw nominations toward the blockbuster summer movies. And smaller independent films generally get the recognition the deserve, at least in the nomination process.

I could give the Grammys some leeway just because the number of albums released each year absolutely dwarfs the number of films that open for wide release. But even then, it seems like half the voters are out of touch and just pick the name they know.

My favorite comment this year came from Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) when asked if winning at the Grammys was a big deal. His response was basically that he had no idea how important it was since everytime the Grammy's were mentioned on the Simpsons they were making fun of it.

There's definitely an element of popularity contest reflected by album sales and what not.

There's occasionally other elements that come into play. There will be years where some of the multiple winners won't be big mainstream names. There are also certain artists that are simply Grammy darlings. They put out good music and repeatedly are recognized by the Grammys for their achievements (Alison Krauss is one such person).

But yeah...there have been some interesting choices in the past. The Album of the Year category has ranged from Santana (2000) to Outkast (2004) to Bob Dylan (1998) to the Dixie Chicks (2007) and that's just looking at the past decade.

I think I might have had the Grammys on for about 15 seconds.

I was channel surfing when I seen the listing for the Grammys. I caught someone at the beginning at their acceptance speech. I have no idea who it was, but she got emotional and started thanking everyone including God and then thanking God for creating their parents, and bla bla bla.

I don't know, it's probably me, but I have a hard time watching stuff like that. I switched the channel and never went back. Sorry I missed some of the performances, but hey, thanks for this thread and reassuring me I really didn't miss all that much.

I'd heard something about Rollins winning one for spoken word, and when asked how he felt about winning, he answered something along the lines of "they give these to michael bolton, how much could it mean?

lil wayne....give me a break. If your native language is dufus, you should be disqualified to reproduce, much less be nominated for any awards. He makes fiddy cent sound like bill gates.

Did Fleet Foxes get any nomination? Because their album really lives up to all the hype,those dudes are amazing.

I guess not, but yeah, I dont expect the Grammy to recognize a great new band one meter away from them.

I love music, I can usually find something redeeming even in an awards show, or a kids talent show, or pick-up blues jam.. whatever.

The Fleet Foxes are part of the indie scene, somehow, I never see a lot of indi artists in the grammys... I could name a ton of bands that released wonderfull albums the last year and were not even close to be nominated, bands that are known all around the world... It is really all about the big names.
