A few years back, I played a charity show. 4 bands, all from the industry I work in. A guy in my office put together the band. Limited rehearsals (just to get arrangements) We played 8 songs and ended with Freebird...was a lot of fun, and it was a one off show that raised a lot of money for charity (tickets were $80 but all went to charity)

For us it depends on the room. Packed we play pearl jam, alive directly into rockin' in the free world. Pink Floyd breathe directly into have a cigar. If the room is dead, we play yellow Ledbetter by PJ or lately its been jet cold hard betch into ac/DC shoot to thrill. Always end with a mashup

Very agree - feels really dumb to play a big finish to a room that's already lost its people and/or energy.

My gang often does a mashup at the end of the 2nd set, but we generally put a bow on the evening with Whole Lotta Love - our singer goes pure flamethrower with that one.

My last band liked to use Shout It Out Loud to finish - that tune is like a fireworks finale set to music (even when KISS isn't playing it!!)

I don't like to be a crabby critter, but I can honestly say that if my band wanted to do either Closing Time or Killing in the Name Of at any point in our show, I'd have to invoke whatever unofficial veto power I might carry. I hope to never hear anybody mangle either of those ever again.

Oddly, I DID find a Youtube video consisting of Semisonic's song with pics of Green Day slideshowing over it. Why someone did that, I have no idea.

In Mugshot Monday, we generally end with AC/DC, Highway to Hell or TNT. TNT is my preference - you have that chaotic chromatic climb up the end and then just basically blow $$## up. End on a bang. Crowds love that.

When I had my alt/indie cover band Six Cowards, we did something in the same vein by ending with the Joy Formidable's "Whirring." Not widely known, but it had that same big roar blowup ending jam that felt good to end on.

Joy Formidable just made my day - absolutely IMMENSE!! If you have (had) a band willing to finish with this, you are living well in at least some capacity

So, we had a rare "rehearsal" last night (which is to say we set up gear, played a few songs, ate some good food, and maybe had a beer....maybe).

We close our shows currently with this.

It goes over well. It ends big. And there's a breakdown in the middle that allows us to say goodnight and still end big. I think it's fine.

However, my band mates brought up last night that we need another closer. They think not enough people can use this as a sing-along. I'm fine with their reasoning. I'm not emotional about this at all.

We play a wide variety from rock to country (modern, classic, and 90s) to pop to funk to soul, etc. We have a ridiculously good guitar player, good keys, slamming drummer (but with dynamics), and three part harmonies for days (two male and one female singer). So options are wide open.

Suggestions that were floated last night included things like Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi, Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith, and stuff like that.

What say you? What's a great bar band closer?

That's a strong one man. It's new enough to get attention and it's got great music and clever lyrics. You might add a few others but I'd keep that one in the mix somewhere. Nice.
