Also maybe an odd choice, but Dominic Aitchison of Mogwai, not the first guy you might think of, no crazy slap solos or 10 finger tapping, but If you listen there's some interesting things going on, different sounds, different styles, very imaginative player

John Patitucci, Doug Johns, Squarepusher, Jimmy Haslip, Bill Dickens, Rocco Prestia, and many, many more. "Better" is a totally subjective term, so my offerings are offered as "different" but totally excellent bassists. We can all learn from each other as well as the greats. Musical creativity and inspiration comes from everywhere, not just other bassists, IMO. BTW - no one mentioned Jaco (or Jauqo!)

How's about Michael Ivins from The Flaming Lips. Not flashy in any way, shape, or form but modern and definitely an integral part of their sound. Killer bass lines on all of their stuff.
