also, BAZIL DONOVAN from Blue Rodeo. Steady as a rock and really grooving country rock lines. great tone.

I saw Max Webster open for Rush back when Rush was touring for "Moving Pictures". It seems like M.W.'s bass player was named Pye DuBois, or something like that. Anyone know if that's right? That guy was playing some pretty cool stuff. It was my first "bass solo" exposure and I was very impressed! I was still a g*****r player back then and hardly payed attention to the bass parts, but that all changed during that show!!

Pye Dubois was Kim Mitchell's writing partner. Max Webster was the name of the band and many people confused Kim Mitchell for Max Webster. Pye's real name is Paul Wood. Dubois is French for Wood. Pye Dubois was a pen name. I heard this probably 20 years ago and can't attest to the authenticity of it.

This depends on what you mean by greatest. My favourite Canadian bassist is Mike Kroeger of Nickelback, his tone is great and he knows how to make a song good, simply by knowing when to play and when not to play.

The bassist was most likely Dave Myles, who replaced their original bassist Mike Tilka. Did he have a moustache and played a Precision with a pick?

That was Dave, He's a friend of a friend of mine. Super nice guy, got to hang with him when we all went to a King Crimson show a couple of years ago.

The Max Webster bassist at that point (early 1981) was Mike Gingrich who used a 5-string Alembic (with a high C-string). The band folded mid-tour, that's why there's a memorial on the sleevenotes of "Exit Stage Left" (Max Webster R.I.P.).
Here's a good recording from that last lineup of Max Webster (Mitchell, McCracken, Watkinson and the newcomers Gingrich and 2nd guitarist Steve McMurry). They do a short "YYZ" pisstake, a few months before "Moving Pictures" was released!
