This thread warms my heart to see so many great trios throughout the past 40-50 years or so. Although they don't all fit the OP's criteria, it's encouraging to see that most of them had a great backline. Long live the power trio!

i would put Hendrix first but i dont think his bass player was as good as MR.Bruce so i will go with Cream but its got to be one of those two. powerful influnce that still carries on to this day.


but there is no correct answer every one has different taste . I am sure some of the old Jazz trio's were at least as good and some of the old blues cats were amazing but didnt get the media or marketing coverage. And everyone knows Jaco was unreal and played with some awesome cats. but in my 57 years -Hendrix was just off the chain and Jack Bruce with Clapton ,Baker unreal.
