Gtar build, 5 string bass.

We decided to put a wider curve on the front, aesthetically and comfort wise.
This is with a bit of alcohol wiped over it.

The fingerboard turned up on Friday, quick service from LMI, thanks.
Glued it up that night so I could get onto carving the next day. Its got some nice colours through the grains.

In the morning I had a coffee and got my strong arm out to start carving.

Started cleaning it up at the body, this wasn't easy due to soft and hard parts in the grain, kept giving me high spots.
Got it at the end though.

Thanks kingrazor.

I wasnt happy with the fingerboard ending so soon on the body, didnt match up with the lower horn.
So from the off cut on the top side, were they give you a choice for zero fret, I glued that to the bottom matching the grains as good as possible.
I'm going to cut an arch to make it blend.

Looks alot better now, just a bit more cleaning up and its onto the electronics cavity.

Ok all the parts are here now, time to build! =)

On with the pickups, these are 2nd hand Bartolini quad coils, custom Roscoe wound.

I started laying out the wood for the top, we want it to match the body top.
I used rose mahogany for the side walls.

IMG_1672.jpg

Gluing the walls.

IMG_1674.jpg

Glued the top pieces to the walls, turned out good.

IMG_1682.jpg

Then the next pic is it all cleaned, with the edges rolled.
Pickup covers done.
IMG_1734.jpg

Next I made the truss rod cover.

IMG_1670.jpg

IMG_1680.jpg

Then drilled holes for the tuners.

IMG_1678.jpg

Back to the pickups, but not for long.
I marked out the positions on the body and pre drilled majority of the material out. But it was late so I couldn't get the router going, way to loud.

IMG_1688.jpg

So then I drilled the holes for the pots, 5 in total, low, mid, high, tone and volume.

IMG_1694.jpg

The customer and I talked about recessing the knobs, I reckon it gives it a cool look, turned out well.

IMG_1696.jpg

Morning again, so I can get onto routing the pickup cavitys.

1 done
IMG_1698.jpg

Both done.
IMG_1700.jpg

Pickups are in and fit well.
I havent matched pickups covers to the body before, I like the look, I will be doing this in the future.

IMG_1736.jpg

Now I'm onto the electronics cavity.
Drilled the input socket before routing out the cavity so it doesn't break having a thin material.

IMG_1692.jpg

Again I drilled out majority of the material before routing.

IMG_1702.jpg

Then finished it of with a router.

IMG_1706.jpg

And thats were I'm up 2.
I have the router issue again, so I cant finish the electronics cavity until the morning.

There hasnt been a definante desicion on the knobs yet, what do people suggest would look good?

Definitely: Yeah I agree Rose mahogany would be nice, I dont have the tools to make knobs though.

I think a darker colours, or even gold knobs to suit the rest of the hardware.
