Gtar build, 5 string bass.

Hi Dave,
Yeah I have a drill press, what is your idea?
I have used a tenon cutter (cheap one from bunnings) didnt turn out to well. There to rough, spend alot of time cleaning up the knob.

For the recesses knobs I removed the bearing from a cove bit, drilled pre holes the same size of the shaft the bearing sits on, so when you put the cove bit in it sits flush and strait with the body.
I use the drill press for the drilling as you can be alot more accurite then a hand drill.

Sorry no updates as yet, I lent a tool out that I require for the 10mm inlays (which I dont like doing as It was meant to be for 1 day, its now 1 week). I have done the side dot inlays. They will be done this weekend. I should also get the frets in and nut done for a dry run.

Ftssjk, I will get you round to play it dry, so we can make any changes if needed before the final sanding.

Dave: I have tried making the knobs as per those post, they work out ok, I will post pics this weekend.
They are hard to keep perfectly round.

Here are the pics for the progress on the bass last weekend.

First I finished the electronics cavity, and made a cover.

Then I got onto the pearl side fret markers.
Drilled the holes and used epoxy mixed with sawdust to hold markers.

All done, after using a file to clean up.

Now to the front fret markers using the same method as the side markers, there is some nice colours popping out of the pearl.

Fret time.
We are using gold fret wire, looks cool. The gold isnt super bling, I reckon it fits in well with the fingerboard colour.
I cut all the frets to length, then glue and press each fret in starting at the 1st fret.

All frets in.

Frets done.

I will carve the nut tomorrow, so soon it will be ready for a dry run, I cant wait!

looks great!

thanks for the photos.
yeah i was wondering if the gold would have been too tacky but it looks pretty good. i think it blends in well with the tas oak neck and with the grain of the pau ferro.

looking forward to the weekend hehe.

I have nearly finished this bass, just the final sanding left.

Here is the nut, I will clean it up before its finally installed, just using it for mock up right now.

The bridge needs to be recessed into the body, as I wanted to keep the string low.

I finished it of with a router and strait file.

The electronics cover I made before didn't last, snapped in half=(
So I re made it out of Myrtle and Tas oak to match the line of the neck.
I used magnets to seal the enclosure, and alu tape for insulation.

Next is the dry run, then its finishing time, which is one of my favourite parts watching the grains reveal themselves.

Hey been awhile since I updated, I have since put in a inlay on the headstock and got it ready for painting.

In this pic I'm sussing out the layout of the inlay.
