Guess who reared her ugly head this afternoon?

Tony Bennett has had to sing "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" every night for about 50 years. I saw an interview where he was asked how he can stand it, and he replied that he only selects songs that he won't mind singing over and over.

Simple man, Kryptonite (sp?), and sunshine on your love all drive me nuts.

I don't mind long train. Sweet home Alabama is an ez crowd pleaser.

Is there something I should know about gimmi 3 steps? I think that is on my bands maybe list to learn this summer. I have never played it.

What's hilarious is I bet 99% of you guys dissing Mustang Sally and Gimme 3 Steps can't even play them right :-)

We play both - Mustang Sally gets a cool slow slap groove with searing guitar solos over the top and people like it and dance. The song isn't tired, but musicians with delusions of grandeur sure do.... I'd rather listen to a band play these tunes than 99.99% of the crappy originals bands out there.

If you're making your ENTIRE living playing cover songs on bass and get to sleep till noon everyday, well then good for you I guess. But in any other context, playing cover songs just because you know people will like them is pretty cheap. And you don't have to be just a "local rock band" to play original music. Nor do you have to "play the same songs 500 times." If you bring good songs and killer mojo, people who are out looking for a good time will find it with your band. And if you're tight and seasoned, you can play a totally different show every night based around your original compositions, and keep things loose and fresh. That's the dream, right there! Death to mustang sally!!

Do you think The Police, AC/DC, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, Nirvana, or Elton John ever played Smoke on the Water or Sweet Home Alabama? Nope, they busted their ass to make up something original and awesome.

You are making some very large assumptions:

1. Every band wants to write orginals.
2. Every band is capable of writing good originals.
3. People really want to hear your 12 crappy songs instead of time tested classic rock songs that they enjoy.

I can gauran-frickin'-tee you that all those original artists, and thousands more, started out in cover bands, and they played cover songs that were every bit as tired and lame as anything named on this thread because they hadn't yet proven themselves as pop songwriters and they wanted to get on the good side of their audiences. It wouldn't take much digging at all to prove it. I have some classic recordings of the early Elton John Band doing "Honky Tonk Woman" which got played so much when the Stones released it, it was worn out within six months.

I don't understand this type of attitude, especially from a musician. Personally, I'd rather listen to a mediocre originals band than sit through yet another lame cover band playing the same songs that all of the other lame cover bands are playing.

That's because you're a musician.

But, in a typical dance club, you and the other musicians make up about 1% of the audience. The other 99% just want to dance and have fun without getting all analytical about it.

If, in addition to being a musician, you were also an entertainer, you'd already get that.

Maybe some people want to play music for fun and enjoy playing covers. I would much rather hear a good cover band than a bad original band.

Fair enough.

Sorry if I'm coming across negative on cover bands. If you're in a cover band and enjoy it, more power to you and rock on. BUT, why would you choose to play the exact same songs that every other cover band plays? Wilson Pickett has a lot of cool songs. Why go with the most obvious and cliched song by him? Why not "Man and A Half"? Don't tell me "The crowd loves Mustang Sally". Maybe they would love "Man and A Half", too if a band ever played it for them.

I think you are missing the point buddy.

It's not always about what you want to play - a cover band is providing a service.
You need to give the punters what they want.
To use the plumber analogy;
It's not like you call up a plumber to fix your toilet and he tells you he is going to fix your sink because he enjoys it more.

I'm all for the integrity of original music however the reality is I got into playing covers to fund my original music - because making it big playing your own stuff is like winning the lottery.
