This is what’s so frustrating about the historical record we’ve been left with. Between these two sources, mine is maybe a 603 (single P EMG)? But the serial number places it two years after the last 603 (which, again, conflicting information between “three pickups” and single P - although unless someone has seen a Pilot with 3 stock pickups I’m going to have to assume this was apocryphal) so either the model numbers didn’t mean much (or Bowdren didn’t correctly identify the distinguishing characteristics between models) or the dating guide needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Or maybe all of the above. Or none of the above.
There is a Guild expert called Hans Moust - and have had some dealings with him over the past few years. I recall him telling me that the Guild serial number guide that we are all using and referring to here is pretty much worthless. If I recall correctly, he stated that he has the "correct" serial nr. guide and that he would be putting in his Guild Guitar Book, Vol. 2 which should include much information on, among other things, Pilot basses...As far as I know, it's not been published yet and he's not in the habit of volunteering too much info, probably because it's going into the new book...I don't think the majority of we Pilot owners are going to get much smarter about them until that book get published and we pay for it...
We'll see - he's also hinted that he also knows a little more about my own Pro5 bass as well...@Hans Moust - are you here...? Please tell us more...!

So simple yet so beautiful. I love the fancy stuff too but once you get about 10 feet away (like at a gig) the simple ones look the best to me.

This blue Pilot is coming over from Finland (my second from that country) on wednesday next week - I'll have it in my hands wednesday evening or sometime thursday...I've been in touch with it's present owner for a couple of months about it - it's in overall excellent condition and comes with it's original hardshell case as well...
I've wanted one of these blue Pilots ever since they first appeared on the market back in the '80s but never did manage to get ahold of one before now - it's very exciting for me...
And @TrustRod - you are quite right, the "simple" ones do make the "best" impressions from a distance, with this blue version certainly being the "King" of 602 first impresions...
With the possible exception of a single canary yellow (stock or custom or refin - no idea) Pilot I know of and wish I owned, "Bluey" is the only Pilot you can clearly and easily see onstage from the back of the bar or the nosebleed seats...
Buuuuuut, then when you DO get up close and personal, the 602M's & 902M's just can't be beat...

I agree, I always love flamed maple. Interesting that Guild didn't do the standard bookmatch that nearly everyone else does. Sometimes it doesn't work but in these three examples it's killer. Especially the brown one.

I've got about $1600-$1800 total into the lot. Sold my most expensive bass a few months ago, a MusicMan USA SUB Bass that I paid $608 for.
I got embarrassed because I often tend to get off topic on threads and ramble on about something that nobody asked about, seems I'm the king of going off on a tangent.
