Guilt

i just sprung for a Nash pb-52 and haven’t told my wife, should I feel as guilty as I do?

Your wife should enjoy the convertible, But I recommend getting rid of the girl....:smug::smug:

But, then, a cautionary tale:

A famous story in 'boutique bass' circles is about the guy who had a BIG ticket (five figures) custom built. His better half only learned of this when she got that month's statement from the credit card company, and sees the charge. Supposedly she informed him it was her or the bass.

It was on eBay in nothing flat, at a big loss.

I bought a 1990 Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray years ago without telling my wife. It was $900, everything was original including the case. The guy bought it and kept it put away, it was better than new. I jumped on it.

She noticed it in my office one day and asked about it, I didn't have the heart to lie to her so I told her what it was and what I spent. Needless to say she was pretty unhappy. I ended up selling it because of the guilt especially when I sat down and played it. She brings it up from time to time, but now I part basses together so she never really knows what's coming and going because it's never a full bass. As long as bills get paid and there is food in the fridge she lets me do my thing mostly. She always asks when she wants to get her nails done or something and I always say yes. That why our wants verses are needs are balanced.

There was a thread months ago here about a guy who bought two several thousand dollar basses in the same month without telling his wife, like 14k-15k total or something ridiculous like that. Now that I would be scared of doing.

We're all going to die someday buddy. Get what you want if you have the means and aren't depriving the missus of anything. I say dig deep recognize that you feel guilty, accept it, and then keep that situation between you the bass the strings and your fingers. Why shouldn't you have the P bass? This is why I like to have matching non-branded black cases for everything....:D
Funny you’d mention cases, i’ve got four SKB 44’s and at least one of them stays empty most of the time. Fortunately wifey is very indulgent when it comes to my obsession. She keeps me to a strict one in one out policy which is actually a good thing in terms of actual storage space. In fairness to her she didn’t insist on the in and out thing until my bass room got too full and I started putting stuff elsewhere in the house, there are still times when i use my mad money to buy a bass or i trade some non musical item for one and i’ll stash it in an empty SKB until i can unlaod one. I’m sure she knows when i get up to trying to be slick but with her spending so much time looking after her sister these days i’m sure i’ve slipped in at least two before i got rid of something. Either way i try not to be underhanded but sometimes circumstances dictate a variation in policy. I rationalize it by staying true to the one in one out policy i just sometimes have an incoming for a while before i manage to get one out, that and the fact she understands i’m weak when it comes to certain things and indulges me where those flaws exist. :D
