It was in response to MDstingray saying:
"You call your spouse 'wife' and your P-bass 'Carol'. That says it all!"
Only one of my basses has a name. It's the Pirate Bass.
We also had a '06 Ford Expedition that we called Big Red. Other than that, I am really not good at naming things.

Lol, I'm normally not so clueless! As long as I could still stay in the pocket, right?
In Spanish and in French, languages that assigned masculine and feminine to objects, the guitar is feminine. Which is why only two of my instruments have ever had boys names. They were just the exception.
My basses all have names, and name tags on their cases. I do church gigs fairly near my place, but if I ever get in a bind, and need a different bass, it's kind of a long round trip - I can call my wife, and ask for "Red", and she can find it and bring it to me in half the time it would take for me to go get it. If my basses were not named, what I'd get would be a crap shoot.
Names for instruments are useful for touring folks - if you have a tech, you can say bring me "Dolly", and you both know what you mean without having to say "The P with the gash on the top binding that's tuned down a full step" or something like that. Of course, if you travel with just 2 basses, it's simpler - you just ask for "the other bass".

A just 28.6" scale Ibanez GSRM25 Mikro Bass, strung with gauge .080 - .062 - .046 - .036 - .026 Elixir Nanoweb guitar strings, and tuned to G#1 standard tuning, that is as one half step bellow the upper 4 strings of a 6 string bass, plus a high E, so a tenor bass sort of tuning.
