Nothing is wrong with what he is doing? Your reading into something that is not there. I have friends who buy and trade gear all the time. Just was curious as 200 is a lot of basses to buy and was hopeful he was having a successful business with buying and trading. If not selling them I was intreqied as most people end up with under 10 bass guitars in a life time.
Admittedly I am pretty intense when it comes to bass. I love gear and thanks to all the many sources of used gear, it is very affordable. It's not like guitars wheremso many used and discontinued models skyrocket in value and become vintage
If I were a guitarist with these impulses I would be broke. Thankfully for bass it is mostle just used gear.
I vaguely remember reading an interview years and years ago where Jesse Keeler of Death from Above 1979 said "I don't use vintage gear that everyone wants. I use vintage gear that no one wants!"
That's pretty much me too!
