Yep, me neither. When I called (after the bass was sold) the salesman told me there was "a little damage on the headstock" hence the reason it was so cheap.
I'm not sure that's how I would categorize that at all.

No pic or details though- Fender has made some dog 5 strings in the past, but if it's one of the newer ones, that'd be a deal...
Compared to the relative cost of a new one at $4800. I guess this is a deal. But, there are TONS of basses I would rather have for $4800 and still A LOT I would rather have at $2800.
I feel bad for the poor shlub who brought it in. He must have been in a bad way if he was forced to sell it at GC.
There are all sorts of reasons gear ends up where it does. Knowing that I wouldn't assume it was under some sort of duress. The PO couldn't won in on a bet and not wanting it, dumped it. Or any of loads of other scenarios. Some people don't care what kind of deal they get.
I've seen this sentiment in regards to pawnshops. I've seen people use pawnshops as their form of financing their lifestyle. So while grandma's ring might end up in one because it was a last resort to save the farm, it could just as easily be there because the owner wanted a different piece of jewelry.
Music stores are the same way. Someone has gear they don't want to spend time selling, they take the easy route and trade in instead. Nothing negative about that transaction.

Note that the Jazz Special looks like it may be missing parts...from the photo it is hard to tell if all of the wiring is there or not.
The fan fret bass may be interesting, but it may not be functional with the normal bridge. Individual bridges for each string would be a fairly inexpensive cure for this potential problem.
