SHIPPING???
Not trying to hijack this thread, but I haven't read anything definitively on this. If I found an instrument listed in a different city or state and decided I wanted to buy it, do they do a free "ship to store" option like most retailers? Shipping would certainly skew price point when compared to buying something new from Musician's Friend or Amazon Prime.

If you use GC.com to place the order, no free shipping. Shipping cost though is very reasonable. Sometimes if you call the location that has the used gear you want, you can ask for free shipping, if it's a piece they've been sitting on, most cases they'll bite and absorb the cost of a shipping with the cost of the gear, but if it is something they just got it, prob not... doesn't hurt to ask though.

I've had a few used basses shipped to my local store. Shipping has always been very reasonable, like $13 or so.

Unfortunately they're not all like that.

I had a guitar (no case) tossed into a huge cardboard box that was filled half way with peanuts and shipped across the country. I'd like to meet the genius that thought that was a good idea and show him just how well the poor guitar did.

Overall they do a pretty good job but it depends on the employee doing the packing.

When I buy used from GC, I always have them ship to local store. That was I can unbox it in the store and make sure there are no issues. If there are, they can refund or remediate on the spot. Generally there are no issues, and shipping is very reasonable. If there are issues, they always work it out for me.

Good info, thanks. The main question will be, is it any good? :) I hope so, regardless of vintage.

I was aware of some wonky issues with SNs on MIJ/CIJ Fenders. Pulling the neck is an excellent idea.

I was talking to an employee about this last time I was in a GC, he said it had to be on the floor a certain number of weeks before they are allowed to buy it. He said he picked some great guitars this way. They probably call friends or shills to come in and snap up the outrageous deals for them, and the decent deals they probably hang them high in the corner so no one can get at them and hope they stay there so they can use their employee discount. At least that's what I would be tempted to do, if I were a dirtbag.

You're correct, they do get friends to pick up good deals. What's even crazier is that they've had to fire people that were pricing things really low intentionally and getting friends to buy them...that's some real fraudulent stuff right there.
