it's ridiculously lame, isn't fun to play and you look like a complete tool when you're on it. Given that by being here, you probably are a bassist, you should know better!
Especially when you could be playing Jericho or VF5!
Nothing was cooler than waking up one day and hearing "Ziggy Stardust" blaring from my son's room, with me going "***?", going in there and seeing him standing there rocking out. That's the first time I'd ever heard of "Guitar Hero".
I'm all for it, it introduces kids to great rock & roll.

Well, kids can get away with it, but grown men, not so sure....
And where the hell are all the great tracks?

Al Di Meola? Aren't you in your early 20's? I can't figure out how anybody that young would learn about these musicians, unless your parents listened to it.
It's great that you've been exposed to this though.
I've got no problem with Guitar Hero. It's got some good music and when you get the hang of it it can be pretty fun as long as yer playing with someone else.
The only thing that frustrates me is that I can actually play most of the songs on there and yet I can only limp through them on Expert in the game...

This kind of response always bothers me about this game...
It's a VIDEO GAME, folks. It's meant to be a form of entertainment you can enjoy on a casual basis. It enlightens our youth about the nature of genuinely good Rock N' Roll, and it's relatively easy to pick up.
Everyone here is (I'm assuming) a musician, and regardless of playing ability we are each dedicated to what is not just a hobby, but a way of life. So think about it. Each of us here knows the dedication and commitment it takes to learn our craft, and each of us knows that in the grand scheme of things most people aren't willing to put forth such dedication towards a musical instrument. Guitar Hero is just a way for them to get an idea what it's like to play like we do, and personally I'm not going to begrudge them the right to understand that being a musician is kickass.
In fact, I'm going to play the game myself, because I don't care how ornery people can get over it. It's fun and you know it.
+1. I like the Guitar Hero games, it's a clever idea and it's GREAT fun at parties (yes even parties with grownups). I wish there was more variety of music (i.e less heavy metal), but there are enough tunes in the game that I can find things that I like.This kind of response always bothers me about this game...

We also have the freeware PC clone, called "Frets On Fire". You can play the Guitar Hero songs on it, and you can even add your own songs with a little bit of effort.
I'm really glad you aren't picking the track list for the next game. I wouldn't enjoy playing any of those artist's music.
As for the game, I dig it. I played it on my break yesterday at work.
We have it in the office and play it pretty regularly on lunches and breaks. It's pretty damn fun and boosts the comradery at work!

My son plays drums, and he can smoke me on this game. I don't even try it on expert. Well, I can do most of the bass lines on expert even though it asks you to play it in a way that is not natural to playing on a real bass. That took some getting used to.
With all that said, we play it a lot in my house. I'm 36, and I've had friends my age over a few times to play. Everyone gets a kick out of it, even if we aren't that good. Who cares really? It's fun anyway.

That's a pretty broad generalisation... I've played it in a department store for about 10 minutes. I'm not a pro at it but that's not the reason why I hate it. I just don't get the idea of emulating a real guitar with a video game.
To be honest, I have much more fun busting out songs on a real guitar or bass. Sorry but I just don't get it.

Not everyone can play an instrument and not everyone is interesting in learning how.
Some people on the other hand, are good at video games though.
