Think I'mma prude, or a Puritan, but as a parent, my first impression was the bimbo chics. Yeesh. THAT is the personna of a rock and roll female? $25 whore is more like it. OBVIOUSLY made by young guys. They should ahve used Avril or somethingI have no use for these games anyway. I;d rather watch the clouds go by if my mind isnt required for a task. We play Wii as a family though. Bowling and baseball in front of the fireplace.

Beign a prude, senvethson, thats a fine rump you got avataring there! ;)

I have two young boys, they dont need the image of the rock and roll chic. You wonder why its a sexist world and the newer generations dont even use the word zipless anymore, its ALL zipless. Naw, not on my watch man. My sons will., hopefully, emerge to be able to make LOVE to a woman, not screw her.

Devils in the details, in the symbolism, if y'all think I overreact. It ALL matters.

It got a very good friend of mine to recently buy a bass!

Shes never played a musical instrument in her life and now she is taking lessons and so on.

So to me its great since it has made playing for real seem accessible to her. And if for her then surely for others too....

Guitar Hero's always been awesome, so much fun and it's also indirectly helped my sight-reading hehe, not the pitch or rhythm of notes on a stave obviously but just getting accustomed to playing fast moving notes and processing them quickly enough to be able to play the right thing... and the game is sooooooo much fun after a bottle of Jäger with a house full of friends :D

If it wasn't for Guitar Hero I would not be playing bass right now. I bought the game, it was fun, and I was like hey, if I like the game this much, let's try the real thing. I havnt looked back since and in 4 months of learning bass with an instructor I think I've picked up the video game maybe once.

Nothing against it, its a fun game, but I enjoy practising on my bass more than time spent mashing buttons.

Video games were never meant to be productive. Nobody plays video games to study for a test or make money. Some people chose video games and some chose playing an instrument. What ever it is it doesn't matter as long as you're having fun.

Anyway....I think I just got trolled.

I'm more of the DDR type guy when it comes to those type games.
My bandmates where hooked on it for a bit, but really the real deal is alot more fun.

My sister's friend actually has a garage band kicking with the game "rock band" Funniest thing evah.

My brother and his girlfriend were like, " I can't wait to hear you on Guitar Hero." I thought it was going to be a snap. I played for about two hours and never got past a single song. The thing is you can't play by ear at all on the music...it's all timing when the silly dots are coming. I kept trying to play the notes by ear (read: when they're supposed to be played).

I guess I'm not a guitar hero. :(

So theres this kid from my high school who was a violin genious. He could sight read music hella fast, when it came to lining up what his hands were doing with whats put in front of him he was a god. So first time he plays guitar hero on expert he completely obliterates any high score I ever had. He didn't even know how to hammer on or pull of which is important int hat game, but he hit quadruplets and stuff by actually playing every single note. It was amazing.

So maybe it does help sight reading. Assuming your hands are up to par, and assuming you know the notes of the music staff, maybe it can be an indirect way to speed you up.

The notes line up perfectly...I expect it wasn't calibrated properly for you. As in, you can set up the lag so the notes and audio line up. To a musician you may have a quicker ear so to speak than most people...

really guitar hero is not that bad, i see both sides of the argument. i dont think people who play guitar hero are musicians or could even hold up against an ameture with a real guitar, but still it exposes people to real music, not the **** they play on the pop stations you hear today that is called music

Erm, haha yeah I love Guitar Hero and yet I'm a musician, how does that work?!?!

Hehe and as for this, I think video games are very productive, just like learning an instrument, I spend far too much time on both of these things and they both help me develop my mind and everything else to no end!

Playing an instrument is just like anything else, you have to somewhat have an aptitude for it from the get go or else you probly wont get too far.

Well that's assuming that somebody has to have an inherit "talent" or affinity towards an instrument or music in general to actually play a real instrument effectively. A great example would be my guitarist, who has NO musical background in his family whatsoever yet is better than many friends of mine that I know who have a rich musical history and have played longer than him. It REALLY IS about how much you put into it, practice is the only way to get better an instrument...talent just takes you there a little quicker. Now that doesn't mean anybody can just spend a few hours playing and turn into Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller or Geddy Lee but that doesn't mean they don't have the right to PLAY or consider themselves able to play...I mean, look at Gene Simmons lol

I may try, but i cant dance for ****, but I can play Dance Dance revolution and get a good score. Is DDR anything like real dancing?(no) But i have fun with it anyway and I can laugh at myself when i try to dance.

That's wonderful, but how much time have you HONESTLY put into learning to dance? Anything artistic (although dancing, when not ballet or w/e, isn't high on my "art" definition list) will take practice and development to get better at. You didn't pick up a bass and play the most difficult line you can play now right off the bat did you? No, you had to practice :bassist:

I just think s real musicians should cut all the GH and Rock band players some slack and let them have their games and we can have our instruments, its not hurting us any.

It's to each his own, but what I'm saying is that anyone and I do mean ANYONE has the ABILITY to learn to play an instrument proficiently with due practice and it's much more satisfying and I wouldn't want to rob anyone of the satisfaction that I and many others share.

Seriously dude, don't be so negative to say that people without "talent" can't learn to play an instrument...that's pretty crappy :scowl:

I used to make fun of idjits that played these games... then my son borrowed someone's copy of GH2, & I tried it... Then, he got Rockband for Christmas, & now he's bought GH3. I've had fun playing each of them, but I do have gripes about these types of games.

So far, my fav is being the drummer in Rockband... simply becauase its more like actually playing something.

I have played Sing Star on the PS2 and think this is pretty good as it is actually developing a real-life skill - i.e. the ability to sing in time and in tune - albeit supported...?

But I think it does help with things like ear training and can be fun competing against others - where it's not just button-pushing and reaction times - but how accurately you can sing! :)

{PS I have no interest in playing 'air guitar' with a console attached though ...:confused:}

I've never seen it, my grandson has a cheap version that plugs directly into the tv. At first I thought it was pretty hokey, but after thinking about it, I like it. We printed out a list of tunes from the game and play several at our gigs (cover band). The younger crowd knows them and they always get a good response! I think it's a great way to expose the younger generations to classic rock tunes.
