GUITAR HERO!!!!! what do you think?

O Im a guitarist. I was a bassist originally,but then I bought a Dean MLX. Also at the time of purchasing my Dean, the TB community was making me feel very unwelcome, openly bashing me and hijacking topics, that is not the type of people I cared at the time to be a part of. Now Im over all that, and I still like this forum, but it is more difficult to play guitar, at least my experience from playing both, buts not about degree of difficulty, its about what calls to you. So rock that bass out.

i was jsut giving you greif. i play both too. even though its about 85% bass. i used to write most of the guitar parts for my old band and i would always make the bass parts the focal point.

There are definitely enough hours in the day to become amazing at both bass and a computer game and anything else someone might want to do.

This is a joke right? I can just see it now: "I'm going to put in an hour of bass practice tonight, but I really need to get my skill up on Guitar Hero so I'd better put in an hour on that too."

I get it. Its a game, its a fun way to spend time with your friends. I'm concerned at how many people spend hours on ANY video game, or the internet, or watching TV, when they could be working on becoming a better musician. I realize there are a lot of hobbyists on TB, and for them, maybe bass and video game time are equal. I just don't see that many people who gig regularly or are passionate about writing or promoting their band being into Guitar Hero that much.

Because they don't have the ambition to play on their real instrument. Their bass is sitting there in the corner collecting dust and it's just plain easier to turn on the game and get the instant satisfaction of playing songs without having to practice on a real fretboard.


I used to really loathe excessive video game playing but after giving this a lot of thought, I've changed my mind about video games in general. I now encourage everyone to spend as much time playing video games as possible and voluntarily take yourself out of competition with me. When more people decide to master Guitar Hero instead of a real guitar then that means more gigs and more $$$ for me. And every guy who spends his free time online pretending to be a seven foot tall barbarian rescuing damsels from castle turrets is one less person competing with me for the hot chicks throwing their panties on stage.

i cant tell you how many times i saw my old room mates sitting inside on a beautiful afternoon.... playing video tennis or video baseball. sure these things are fun but why would you pass on the real thing? sad

i like the games, honestly they are fun if you are with a group of friends who arent as musically inclined as yourself. sometimes its fun to sit down and just goof around with it to see what its got. i will admit i do spend some time playing it when i should be bassing it up, but still in all reality for me, its just a game, i dont take it to the level where i enter in competitions, and my school had one the other week, it was pathetic; there were about two songs played the entire time, and the only difficulty played on was medium. i personally find the drums on Rock band to be pretty fun actually, they got me inte3rested in drumming and help me work on getting that foot and hand coordination in sync with each other. I do agree though that it is getting a little out of hand nowadays, but still, its just a game and like it was said earlier; let them play guitar hero, ill be getting all the real girls to throw their panties on stage...

I don't play video games, the only console i own is an xbox that i bought for $20 to watch movies on.

Does anyone else realize how sad this is? For the amount of money people spend on this s**t ($500 for a console, $60 for the game, $60 for more controllers, the list goes on, and these are estimates). They could go out and buy... oh my god... a REAL guitar! Or some other real musical instrument. And the amount of time some people spend playing guitar hero, they could actually become somewhat proficient with a real instrument.

Everyone needs to chill on the whole "you could buy a real guitar with the money spent on gh thing". I have guitar hero, but I already had my ps2 for 6 years before i got it, therefor, i only paid $60 for it and that was it(i'd love for someone to show me a nice bass they paid $60 for). Most people dont go and buy a $500 dollar system for one game, do you realize how ******** that would be? If im gonna spend $500 on a console, I'd like there to be more than one good game(which is why I dont have an xbox or ps3 yet). I've said this already, but, for me, guitar hero actually helps loosen up my fingers and helps their dexterity. I really dont understand what the big deal is, if you dont like it, dont play it, the gamers ain't gonna bother you. In fact, the couple of guys im jammin with love gh, and one of them is one of the best guitarists I have ever played with. So I guess a musician can either embrace gh with open arms or shun it. And just so you know, me and my friends probly spend 80% more free time jamming than we do playing games.

i have mixed feelings for the game, yeah its a game so its harmless entertainment but if some of my friends put as much time into a real guitar or bass as they did with GH (2 of them beat GH1,2,and3 on expert) they would be good enough to play in a real band.

There is something that every human being in the world does called escapism, meaning that everyone has something to take their minds of of the stresses of everyday life. Some people read, some people watch tv or go on the net, some people play games, and some people play music. Its only a matter of opinion that one of those things is "better" than any of the other options. I am a believer that games can be just as stimulating as reading or music (having done both a lot). I've been in music since fourth grade and playing games a little longer, both have their place in my life, and while I will admit there are those that take gaming to the extreme as far as addiction goes, 99.9% of gamers have complete control over the way we play. I was in a band, went to college, and had a job and a girlfriend. I still found a little time to play my psp every now and then, but never pore than a half hour. I guess what im really trying to say with all this is, you can have your opinions about games or whatever, but I think its wrong to think your better than someone else because they spend some of their free time differently than you do and you think the thing you do is on a higher plane than than anything else. Guitar Hero/Rock Band are a lot of fun to play with friends. We love playing music together in a real band, so the game is great. The songs are preloaded, the tempo is unchanging, the crowd, lights, tone - all ready for rock! It's a fun challenge in an environment we already enjoy.

As far as kids talking smack - it's an age thing, not caused by video games. Get good at bass and feel secure in your ability, there will always be a defiant kid knocking down everything he doesn't understand. Smile and tell them not to let the secret out that bass is more fun.

Erm no not a joke at all, computer games like this are just another skill-building thing to do like playing an instrument, I think it's good to try to constantly improve every aspect of life that makes you happy.

To be honest, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, playing an instrument is as pointless as playing a computer game if you look at everything objectively.

I think the game is great, its a waste of time sure, but if you wanna get existential about it so is playing a real instrument.

First of all, I think most people would agree that reading literature is better than watching Rock of Love. I would not put reading on par with watching TV. I'll admit. I like watching classic movies, but I do it late at night or early in the morning when practicing bass would disturb others, so it dosen't take away from my practice time.

Thats cool dude, its just even tv can be informative, I a lot of stuff as a kid cuz i was one of those weird kids who would rather watch discovery channel or animal planet than most cartoons. I do play games and watch the tube, but usually spend an hour or two every day playin bass, maybe more cuz sometimes i get something in my head and i just spontaneously pick up my acoustic bass and start playin. But im into a lot of things considered a waste of time, like anime and games, guess thats why time consumer is the perfect name for me.

I have never played the game. But I just had a new 12 year old student start who told me Guitar Hero was the reason that he wanted to play bass. The game inspired him to want to do it for real. I think that's a good thing.

I own guitar hero 2, but I don't play it that often (nothing against the game, I just haven't been playing games in general very much lately), and I can beat it on medium, so I guess I'm somewhere between "It's Really Fun" and "I Don't Care".

Recently, I met a bright kid about 10 or 12 years old. It was at a party and I had my ukulele along. The kid asked to see my uke and I showed him how to hold it and strum a chord or two.

It turned out he is a whiz at Guitar Hero but he had never held a real guitar before (or uke or bass or whatever). I had to explain to him how you make different notes by pressing on the strings -- his "guitar" only has buttons.

I'm OK with computer games, but when they take the place of real life it's just sad.
