Opinions on carry choices please....
I'm torn between a Glock 27 (or 29) or a Sig 229SAS. I'm leaning toward the Glock mostly because of price but also because the LaserMax system looks incredible. Both are top-notch weapons and I probably would be fine with either but I'm wondering about your opinions on them, specifically IWB holsters. Discuss....

I've never been a fan of lasers on handguns. I do have them on rifles though. My shot with a handgun is a quick point and instinctual aim off the front site. I never take time to line up both sites or spot a laser. On a rifle, my shooting technique is much different. With pleny of room to mount things, a laser can be a plus. Just my 2 cents. Many people like their lasers on their handguns. I even know a guy that works for Crimson Trace :o

+1 to the above. The only time you can legally bring your firearm into action is if your life is being threatened. You will have little time to do much else than point and shoot off the front sight. Very unlikely that laser is going to be of any help. Since you asked, my preference would be the Sig with combat sights. I am not a fan of the Glock trigger system and the "blockish" nature of the Glock frame will not ride well in a in-the-waist-band style holster.

edit: if it means anything to you I am a NRA certified handgun and personal protection instructor.

I could see where a laser might help someone that's new to shooting handguns. It would provide good feedback for establishing point of aim, etc. I also don't like guns with light rails in front of the trigger guard.......since I would never mount anything there :) Personally, I'd rather see a new shooter take some classes and not rely on a laser.......but again, just my 2 cents.

Glocks are always a love hate thing. I have two, a 21 and 36 that I keep for taking Glock oriented shooting classes at one of our local ranges. Right now, I wish they where both 9's instead of .45s :( Both shoot great when I'm in the Glock mode :) but I normally shoot my 1911 based guns, my CZ97B's or various "Mouse Guns" much more often.

Yep, classes and practice, practice, practice. It is not unusual for me to shoot 500 to 800 rounds when I go to the range and I might go to the range once a week when the weather permits.
I personally carry 1911's and S&W J-frames. I do have a KelTec .380 mouse gun for special occasions...

See, the great thing about Glocks are that if you ever get into a situation where a large number of bad guys are coming your way, you can always cock it and throw it....*BAM* instant grenade :)

I will admit my bias up front: I own and carry SIGs. I owned a G17 and sold it.

I believe Glock has resolved their "issues" with the .40 barrels, but it has been a bone of contention with their guns in this caliber. Google "Glock kaboom". There was a problem with unsupported case heads allowing brass cartridges to rupture and vent through the mag well.

I don't know your physiology, but I would not want to shoot a compact 10mm enough to feel adequately trained with it.

However, I will suggest that if you are considering something the size of a P229, the G19 is probably the easiest gun of decent caliber to use. The 9mm is a good defense round, is easier to shoot an costs less so you can train more.

The P229 is a great gun. My P228 is similar. It will serve you well for as long as you own it. A P245 is my EDC. S&W M&P compacts are also excellent, if you want compact.

Whatever you choose, give serious consideration to the XS 24/7 Big Dot sight system. I find this a much better investment on a defensive handgun than a laser.

Whatever you choose, budget time and $$ to get professional training.

I agree with you BOTH on the laser issue... but the LaserMax just fits so seamlessly into the barrel glide rod that it would be a shame not to get one installed. I don't currently have a laser on any of my handguns, and I have over 25.

I have not been a Glock fan in the past, but after gripping just about every carry option at the show a few weekends ago it just feels SO NATURAL. I love the grip. I also loved the grip of the Sig 229SAS with Hogue grips. Very COMFY!

My wife is a retired gun dealer. One day a customer came into the shop with a bad limp. He was in the woods with a Glock in a shoulder holster. A tree branch caught the trigger and it discharged putting a bullet down his leg and out again. He had two plastic tubes inserted in the wound and once a week he had to go to the Doctor to have the tubes pulled out just a bit so the wound would heal from the inside out. Ugly situation.

edit: By the way, he unloaded the Glock literally and figuratively

Safety on?? Not on a Glock, that's their true beauty, IMHO. It's built into the trigger. Unless you pull the trigger........or a branch pulls the trigger, it won't go bang. It seems like his mode for woods carry was not very well thought out if a branch was able depress the safety on the trigger and pull it. That has to be the freakiest of all freak accidents.
