Double Bass Gut Strings: Are They Worth It To Try? (part II)

When I buy another D and G to mix with steel at some point it will be a Gamut Lyon varnished medium G and a Gamut Pistoy varnished light D string like calivox. I think the medium G has the mojo and the pistoy light D avoids the thunk.

If you want to pair with spiros the E/A have to be really worn in or the mix is a drag.

They aren't as loud as steel spiros on the D/G, but they are different and in a mix they project in a different way.

I don't use them right now because I can't get what I want out of my bass from them. In my work with the bow they don't sound like I want my bass to.

That will most likely change again.

I'm actually using a Pistoy G right now too because it responds and recovers faster than the Lyon. The sound is different and I didn't like it at first but now that the string has broken in, I do quite a bit. The Lyon G is a thing of beauty though and I have a Lyon G on my backup bass.

The Pistoy D is another thing of beauty. I started using light gauge D strings for 2 reasons: I didn't need to modify my nut and bridge slots and I suspected that they would have better definition than a heavier string. As I've not tried a heavier D, I don't know if that is true or not. On my basses, at least, the light Pistoy D sounds a lot like a lower pitched medium Lyon G.

Olivieraleman, I believe, is in the process of acquiring a heavy or heavy + Pistoy D. He has also tried a light Pistoy D so he should have some insight on the differences soon.

I didn't mean to offend our Chorda String EXPERT here as I had no idea that Pirastro makes Plain Gut Strings specially for him!!! You are in deed lucky mate because on my set E & A are SILVER WOUND GUT and only D & G are plain gut! Clef gut is gut all the way!!! Chorda is manipulated so they not thick like tree trunks! Do your research first or buy a set like me! Chorda is the closest to the real thing!

sorry i just thought that when a string is made out of gut it is gut i mean that is what gut is, right? If it is wound or not,why else would they need so say if it is wound or not if it has to be plan gut to be called gut . For that matter why call it plan gut why not just gut? You know why because you have both wound and plan gut both are equally called gut. so they have to make the distinction. so if i am wrong what would you call the E & A out of the set? not wound gut we all know that string is not gut, but yet is would not fall into the steel string category mabe a synthetic string i don't know.

I think that it is a general consensus on TB that a full gut set is made of D ang G gut, E and A wound on gut or E and A plain gut.

that is what i thought, but nope wound E's and A's with a gut core are not gut strings at all apparently. nor do they sound anything like gut.

I don't know where you are getting your information and I have a feeling that you are just trying to cause trouble but I'll bite this once.

Wrapped gut aren't metal strings with a gut core, they are gut strings that are wrapped in wire to increase the mass of the string to reduce the thickness needed to have a stable string at a low pitch. HUGE difference. The side benefit of the same mass/thinner string is the string has more definition than a plain gut string. I have a Gamut silver wrapped A and E on my back up bass and they not only sound like gut but pull the wrapping off and, whoa, they are gut. In fact, they are a useable gut D and G. If I had the patience, I could pull the wrapping off and use them as a D and G. For the record, I don't.

This is not the same thing as a metal string that has a gut core like an Olive or Eudoxa nor it is a hybrid which is a metal string with a synthetic core like a Dominant or Evah Pirazzi. All of which are fine strings btw.

Does anyone else actually make a plain gut E?

I never tried those, but I think Clef offers a full PLAIN GUT set.

By the way, does anybody ever tried these gut Strings? TORO strings, a string maker from Italy. My luthier who is a Baroque instruments specialist recommended me these and said to me that they are very good quality strings comparable to Gamut and are in the same price range. Just curious about it.

I have Clefs before I put this set other Lenzners on. I like the Lenzners better than the Clefs. Does anyone know about the gut strings Lemur sells? I see they offer a varnished plain gut E
