Double Bass GUTS ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!

@Thomas88 I`ve played Chorda G earlier and have now C.H. GD on my bass. They`re louder, more projective and richer in complexity than any plain gut pair I`ve ever tried. Sound directly out of late 50`s Miles record. If you like that you wont be disappointed. I feel you on the U.S imports, I hopefully get my new Gamut Pistoy plain A delivered tomorrow, but i ended up paying the string + taxes and customs. I could get a full set of Velvets for that price in EU.

@Povl Carstensen You know I tried! I`m pretty much converted now :) With that said, I still have and will keep my no-name cheapo GD for backup.

@dhergert You have Dan Larson and Damian Dlugolecki just around your block, so you`re pretty well set :)
My current set is uniform, so I do not have an urge to try this or that string. But I probably will at a point.

I will confer that Evah's do absolutely nothing for me. They sound boxy and feel strange. They don't have the depth of either straight steels or straight guts. All in all I've really gotten out of hybrids...Obligatos, Bel Cantos, Zyex. After all that time and money it is Spiros, Dan Larson, Dlugoleckis, Chorda or bust.

C above G.
I have the Efrano high C (medium and heavy) Sam was referring to.
They are both on the higher tension side, mix well with Spiros (4/4 Light or medium) tensionwise. Much higher tension than their regular set.
But almost any gut string maker can make you a custom naked gut string and usually it doesn't cost more (at least not much more) than a catalog string.
I talked to the lady who now runs Efrano and she promised me that she will make strings the diameter I want. It just takes more time than sending a string from the shelf (a few weeks or a month, I assume).

You might also have a look at my excel file in my DropBox for tension comparison to find high C strings.
Have a look at my signature or in one of the string stickies for the link.

I agree pretty much with this
Real gut or real metal - I never tried a synthetic “gut like” that sounded anything like gut - furthermore unlike gut they just become duller and dead with time.
At least spiros mellow out and last a long time ...
And gut as we know improves with age and stretching out.

I recently switched back to Chorda Carlos GD / Evah slap AE from noname GD / Pistoy A / Evah slap E and am loving it. With reasonably high action it sounds killer and feels great, sligthly tenser and tighter than plain GDA setup, silky smooth feel under the fingers. I like that resistance for my right hand. Pistoy feel became a bit of a problem when playing outside in the sun or under hot stage lights, with a little help from rosin it would stick to my sweating fingers.

There`s this instant PC thing with CH Chordas, and they`re louder than anything. Best plain gut GD pair I ever tried.

Does anyone know precisely what the (tension-)difference is between regular Chordas and "Rodriques"?

No, I don`t, but my wild quess goes that you want the Henriquez edition. Reqular Chorda D doesn`t pizz well, it`s attack and fundamental only, no sustain at all. It`s too fat gauge to do that with other manufacturing qualities, low twist rate and stiffness. The numbers on Pirastro page really doesn`t tell anything, even the CH D feels tenser and stiffer than any plain D I`ve tried. I think that that`s where all the power and clarity is coming from. Can`t tell about the A and E, never tried those.

Have you tried Gamut Lyon G&D's? Would be nice to hear your thoughts on the CH G&D vs Lyons if you have. I've been playing Lyon Heavy+ G&Ds paired with Henriquez E&A strings but I haven't tried the CH G&D strings on my own bass yet.
