Had to put my dog down

It hurts so bad. I am deeply sorry but it had to be done.
You made the right decision.
We had to put "Charlie" down last year and I cried a lot.
Dogs are wonderful partners.

Some day you might decide to have another buddy and I can only suggest that you find a "rescue" pal. They seem to know that you saved them and are the most loyal of all.

He took sick this weekend and they discovered a mass on his liver. He was 13 so the chances of him surviving the surgery were basically next to nothing and there was nothing else that could have been done. Rather than put him through that, I made the call to let him go. I know he's better off, still stings though.
Sorry to hear about your pal. You made the right call.

Hang in there man. We lost two amazing Great Danes within ten days of each other a couple of months ago. It's the unfortunate reality of being a pet owner that you're probably going to outlive your pet.

We adopted a cat from the rescue recently, my wife can't stand a house with no pets. I'm not really a cat guy, but this little dude is pretty cool. Still hankerin' for another Dane. As soon as I find a reputable breeder who can get me the color I want, I'll be right back at it.

Hey guys. Thanks for the messages. I'm not in the situation at the moment (recently laid off, it's been a great month :/ ) to get a new buddy, but I do plan on getting one when I'm a little more settled. In the meantime, the cat has been extra snuggly. I think she knows her tormentee isn't coming home.

I hate these threads, as I went through most of my adult, parental life, taking or leaving pets as they came and went. Then while playing at a pool party, some labrador breeders from the same neighborhood, came to the party with a litter of black labs, which happen to be the only breed of dog that i never had as a child. I bought 2 six week old puppies that changed my life. All my other dogs were outside dogs, and these pups were the first raised inside. These labs were so incredibly intelligent, that I never had to leash them anywhere I went with them. You think the dog whisperer "Caesar's Daddy was an ambassador for calm and total trust a dog has for his owner? I was the envy of all pet owners at the dog park. All I had to do was lower the tailgate of my Z71, and off we went. Then one day I came home after only 8 years of friendship, and one of my labs could not greet me at the door. After testing, 4 days later he was gone as a result of Cancer. I laid beside him as they gave him the lethal injection that put him to sleep, and felt his last breathe leave him. I WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT HIM. I cry often when I see the grey spots on my other Lab's mouth, and dread the day that he leaves me. You may call me crazy, but I would rather have my old friend, than all the pretty women that I have been lucky enough to spend time with, that broke my heart, and nearly broke me. Now back to the OP: No one feels your pain, more than I, and if there was a way to fill the void, mine would be filled by now. Know, that your friend had the best possible life, with you, and rumor has it that they are right beside us in a second life. So honor them by the way you treat other animals, and never raise your hand in anger to any animal, because it will haunt you forever. All my prayers.

Our dog Romeo was also put down a few months back on the day we flew back from seeing my wife's folks. She had him through thick and thin for 15 years. He died whilst we were in the air - the kennels took him to the vets and they put him down. It has been very hard to take, not being there with him at the end. We feel awful for him passing without us being right by his side. This thread has brought back that sad memory, but mostly we talk about Romeo a lot and celebrate his life, how he made us laugh, the things he used to get up to, how much we miss him. We are definitely not ready for another dog yet, but in time we probably will - and like folks here have suggested, we've already said it'll be from a rescue place.

So Sonic, its very early days for you and, as you know doubt realise, it does get easier. It's heartwarming there's a lot of empathy with you from TBers, including me too. Peace.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
