That being said I agree with an earlier post that a player like Hadrien, IMO, would be better served touring as a primary soloist in his own band, with another 'BASEplayer' in tow to play supportive lines. His amazing technique obviously has a lot of fans and I'm sure he could build a career off of just that.

That's what Jeff Berlin does.

And it works for him. A horn player trapped in a bass players body.

I agree that he is to be applauded for honesty and it gives us all the chance to reflect on our own approach and consider whether our egos are getting in the way of the band making great music

Musicians should understand that when you are hired to be a side man that is what you are. It is not your band. An ego is just that, an ego but ignorance and the not caring attitude can some times destroy you far more quicker than ego ever could.

So bassplaying is behind not with,i cannot agree, i don't think JM call Hadrien without know the guy, so maybe i'm not in the rigth place anyway.

Gary is a great musician, but in this post, i don't think it's a universal law just a point of wiew, that causes more damage for Hadrien in the sense that it say that he IS not a good bassplayer .

Again, Gary wasn't saying that Hadrien is not a good player, just that he was overplaying sometimes and wasn't an overall good fit for the band compared to a more groove-oriented player like Etienne. This reflects my own views when i evaluate the two players. Hadrien's soloing is quite spectacular, but IMO his tone/feel/ideas when comping aren't AS compelling. Still great, but IMO not nearly as organic and grooving as Etienne's, or any number of other players. Again, IMO of course.

IME it is equally as difficult and challenging to be able to add that special subtle element to your groove/supportive playing as it is to learn how to solo like a horn player. Also, and again this is again IME, the more I focus on learning how to get inside a groove and make the rest of the band sound amazing, the more I work and the better the rest of the band plays.

Hadrian is one of the new hot young players who is getting notoriety in the bass world right now,Etienne has been around for awhile and has more experience and that's what JM wanted on his set.Gary Husband has been a top player for many years and contrary to some peoples belief musicians usually get better as they get older so I don't thing he's jealous because he has already done everything Hadrian is trying to do .

One thing has always been one of my, lets say top 5 ways to be a great bass player or musician is to listen during a performance. Being a bass player, my problem is dealing with drummers that are tooooo busy because I play jazz/rock with drummers who fell they have to show off their chops. There is fine line being busy and stepping on toes. I play jazz and jazz/rock and I have my moments to shine by taking a solo. But, when I'm comping, I try to give the soloist all the support so they're free to create and not have to worry about a foundation the same way I would want them to be supportive during my solos.

I've asked more drummers just to lay out when I solo just for this reason they're not great listeners. ..... It takes a lot of commitment to play drums and most drummers are thinking about the end of the song while playing the middle. .... I'm not saying 'all drummers' or to trash drummers more to encourage drummers who may read this to think differently while they're playing. .....
JM decision to replace his bassist would have come him being the leader and deciding who best he wanted behind him for support.

Maybe i have an another music conception, the bassplaying is not a job, it's just an instrument and when i play, it's only my mind and not a roleplaying.

If you need a sideman call a sideman or tell the guy : ok keep behind, in this way, it's not Hadrien who decided for the solos, but JM no?

And sorry i m always thinking there's multiple ways to play bass,

Pretty sure alot of people were saying the same thing about Jaco in the 70's. I think it's perfectly valid, but I think it's personal preference...

I think of bass the same way. So does John McLaughlin I imagine. Look at the bassists he's used over the years- he's hired many of the top fusion bassists for decades, and has always given them room for soloing and exciting playing. But remember that it wasn't Gary that would have fired Hadrien- it would have been John. So despite the excellent musicianship he is capable of, he obviously wasn't doing something with his playing that he should have been for that gig.

Hadrien is no longer a "hot young talent". He is an established artist with a singular voice.

IMO Gary was expressing his view. Not John's.

I didn't see this as a McLaughlin firing Hadrien situation, just a band change up. I have a lot of McLaughin's recordings, and the bass chair is usually changed every few albums. Hadrien is a young cat, I'll be looking forward to and checking out his work out for years to come.

Why do ppl always assume others bass a bass player's skill soley off Youtube?? There are THOUSANDS of bassist's on this sight from ALL over the world. Not to mention they may have material aside from computer videos that support their opinions. It trips me out when this is the first thing ppl think.

As far as the discussion, dude didnt like HF's playing, got someone else. Plain and simple. Most ppl that follow the band would have inquired anyway what happened when they saw Etienne instead of Hadrien. Like Jauqo said, atleast he was a man and up front about it.
