I don't view Gary's comments as a slam re. HF.
John hired him, toured him, recorded him. Gary knows this.


Remember when Zawinul fired Bona, then Linley gave an interview saying that "Joe was very happy with the current bass situation".

Zawinul was known for saying whoever he had on Bass at the time was the greatest Bass player in the world and Ironically it was Etienne who got fired by Zawinul not Bona

I do have to admit that I respect Gary for being so upfront with his opinion. I don't believe he was trying to 'bash' Hadrien; I think Gary was just being honest. That being said, I don't believe that it was necessary for him to be THAT honest.

It's pretty clear that Gary has a lot of respect for what Hadrien does, but it's also clear that the article contained some criticism of Hadrien's playing. Not harsh or mean criticism, but criticism nonetheless. I have to admit that I'm confused as to why Gary responded the way he did. If he wanted to offer some constructive criticism towards Hadrien, it would have been much more appropriate to do it in private rather than on a public drum forum.

I don't know about what other people here think, but to me it's bad form to criticize another musician publicly. Musicians (especially from the same band) share a bond of 'brotherhood' or whatever you want to call it. In my opinion, Gary's comments were probably unnecessary.

Why was it important that posters on an internet drum forum know what flaws in Hadrien's playing made Gary glad of a change? Couldn't Gary have just said that he was happy for a fresh sound and left out any criticism of Hadrien?

Anyway, great discussion.

Honesty is an art form in itself. And maybe it was time for some one to be as honest as he was about his situation with what he felt was a certain type of player.

There was a time before the internet existed when musicians would honestly tell another musician how they felt and at times express it during magazine or radio interviews.




Can a musician really express how they feel about another musician these days?

I don't know.... I'm sure some people don't mind, but I sure wouldn't feel comfortable publicly criticizing another musician that I know and have worked with.
