I don't think one's sexual orientation or gender identity has much at all to do with recognizing good looks in someone else. You know it when you see it.

I've wondered about this. The thread title has the word 'handsome' in it, not 'attractive.' I can find someone handsome (or beautiful) and not be physically or sexually attracted to them. But I suspect that some of the guys here who are professing not to know when another man is handsome have, to one degree or another, been trained or trained themselves not to look.

Homophobia or fear of homophobia or fear of not being homophobic enough may have little to do with it. Perhaps it's more on the order of 'Why would I CARE if another guy is good-looking - it simply isn't relevant to me, so I'm not going to think about it.' To a straight man, a woman being good-looking is more relevant just because she's fun to look at if she is, where no such fun exists while looking at a man.

I tend to see pieces of people rather than whole people. Last time I was at Best Buy the guy helping me had the funniest hands I've ever seen on a cisgender male. (I'm assuming he was cisgender; I had no doubt until I saw his hands, and they did not go with the rest of him, including his enormous feet.) The fact that I noticed his hands did not mean I was attracted to or repulsed by them. I just noticed.

i'd say no to jay leno. men can be attractive, charismatic, sexy or cute without being handsome, but that may be just my opinion.
That's also true of women, and it works both directions. We had a neighbor who was a spectacularly beautiful woman, and who would sun herself wearing a bikini in the back yard. She was truly beautiful and also perhaps the least sexy woman I have ever met. I think she probably could have been stark naked without being sexy, although I never found out. She always looked like she was fully dressed to me, no matter how much or how little she was wearing.

While I'm certain your assessment is correct for some men I don't think it's true all that often. I, too, have trouble identifying a handsome man although I've learned to become better at it than when I was younger. As a young man I had no clue what was considered handsome unless it was pointed out to me. Obviously I knew at a fairly young age that people considered Clark Gable handsome, but had I not been told I wouldn't have known. More conditioning with age has made me more able to pick them out, but it wasn't a natural ability. However I knew from a very young age when I saw what I considered a beautiful woman... I did not have to be told or taught.

Just from my own experience, and from rational analysis, I disagree that the inability to identify handsome men, or to post such a comment, is somehow indicative of insecurity but rather a natural reaction to what each individual finds attractive.

More reasonable to me is the notion that different people have different proclivities toward the sexes. Individual perception of beauty and attraction go hand in hand. In other words, one man may only have a beauty reaction to women, where another man may have equal beauty reactions to men and women, while still another man may have beauty reactions only for other men. If I don't find something beautiful how would I discern those who are from those who aren't? And who decides what is beautiful anyway? I thought beauty was in the eye of the beholder. if that is true then my failure to find men beautiful indicates nothing except that; no need to read into my personality beyond it.

I'd consider it a generalization fallacy to say that the anxiety I'm talking about is behind any given individual's statement that they can't identify a good-looking man. I carefully avoided accusing any particular poster of being homophobic. But when somebody asks, "Who do you think is a good looking man?" and a chorus of guys immediately jump all over themselves to say, "not me! I'm straight! I have no idea what a good looking man is!"... come on.

And that's why I distinguished "handsome" from "attractive." I'm frequently surprised by what I'm told women find attractive. Him? Really? Why? I don't get it. But I certainly see guys I meet or actors I see in movies and say, "Wow. That is a well-put-together man." And for all I know a woman doesn't find him particularly attractive

That's what's fascinating about your posts in this thread. No one said what you claim; no one said "I'm straight" as if to validate their masculinity, as you seem to think. There was/is no "chorus of guys." Two guys had indicated ... without any reference to sexuality mind you ... that they don't discern handsomeness in men when you brought homophobia into this. And you continue to bring up sexuality and imply a link between homosexuality/homophobia and the idea of men not seeing beauty in other men.

It's got me scratchin' my head. I see more that's curious in your posts than I do in a guy claiming he doesn't see beauty in men...

Not what I said...but whatever.....

I know it wasn't what you said but you kinda implied it by disagreeing with me. I mean, it's pretty common knowledge that a lot of women are interested in celebrity men simply because of their celebrity and wealth. Plenty of young beautiful women hang out with old, fat, ugly guys. Because they're rich and/or famous and/or a celebrity.

No, I didn't imply anything of the sort!.....

Mr. Jagger and Mr. Stewart were attracting female interest long before they became wealthy.....

I repeat myself, yet again, for your benefit.....

It's about CHARISMA......That thing that separates the "Stars" from the also rans.....That something that makes you want to watch them.....Bugger all to do with CA$H

Actually suspect that CA$H had very little to do with women finding Jagger and Stewart attractive....

It's not as if they had any chance of getting their hands on any of the guys dosh when they'e wedged in with 10,000 other women in a stadium is it?.....

I'll stick by my original statement....Charisma....A certain Je ne sais quois.....

jagger when he was younger was - to me - quite sexy. and i would have definitely thought so had he been a guy i met who wasn't famous. while most men think that money is very attractive to women, i've rarely met a woman who found cash a draw.

i did have an associate years ago who always dressed just so, took care of herself and lived as well as she could who decided she wanted to meet a rich guy. she joined a very expensive gym nearby that was known to be a meet market, and ironically, ended up dating a guy she met there for weeks who was looking for a rich woman! *LOLOL* it works both ways. btw, they broke up when they mutually disclosed that neither was wealthy :D

You think women don't find wealthy men attractive?

Mmm, ok, we'll just have to disagree on that one... :D

men always have this attitude. some women do find confidence attractive, which can go with being successful. but when i had a very wealthy guy i was seeing, some men i knew commented basically "See? I knew it - she's after money!" despite the fact that the boyfriend right after didn't have a job or a penny and the boyfriend before was a doorman at a club. i've always noticed that whenever i have a broke boyfriend or one with an average income, no one said anything but dating a well off guy made most of the men around me sure i was only with the guy for his money.

i guess it never occurred to any of them that all the guys i've been with, broke or wealthy, are guys who i had a lot in common with, really liked or loved, and who i found attractive and had fun with.

sure, i know it can go either way, but this thread was about handsome.

Yes, but the thread specifies "handsome." I don't know in what context Jay Leno is considered handsome. Witty? Charming? Cute, in a certain light, in another age, but handsome? No.
exactly!

fairly homely, really, but a lively, interesting and funny guy who seems like he'd be fun to hang around with.
