That looks like buckeye burl. Especially once it's been finished.

I'm not sure yet. That's a good question. When I get the bass, I'll let you all know.

They do make strings for short scale basses like that, I think. The higher strings will likely be plain steel so the length doesn't really matter.

Yeah, but "purpleheart" is really more of a dark magenta than it is purple.

Call it whatever you want - IMO, purpleheart has a very tacky look.

But, what ever color that buckeye top is, it works for me. Classy.
