Hartke Appreciation Thread

I bought a new 3500 a few years back, and I have been really happy with the tone and power. I run it through an old Trace Elliot 4x10 cab, and I get some great low end. I just wanted to pass on to all of you newer Hartke owners that there was a great thread for people’s settings on the amp. I know that it helped me dial in the sound that I wanted.

Lastly, someone needs to tell Hartke that while there amps are good; they are some of the ugliest amps on the market. It may be the strongest, but it certainly won’t be the prettiest girl at the ball.

Ha. The old thread resurfaces.

I posted way back when I was using a Music Man HD130 head and a Hartke 410XL. I used that as a practice amp for a couple of years but gigged with an Ampeg B100R. I put it up on an amp stand, and ran a direct out into the PA, so it was really a stage monitor.

Recently I decided to downsize my gear. Fifty pounds is about the limit, and that 410XL/HD130 scaled out at 132 lb and the Ampeg at 65.

I did a bunch of horsetrading with the local music store and walked out with a Hartke HA2500 (19.5 lb) and a Transporter 115 (51 lb). The monsters are all gone, and, although the combination of head and cab are a little more than the Ampeg, in fact, since I move just the cab or the head, it is in effect lighter.

I'm past the age when I need to prove anything with big honkin' gear on stage -- I let the PA do the heavy lifting.

I have to say, I like the sound of the new rig. I don't know if I'll ever gig with it, but I like it enough that the B100R will be the next one to go on the block.

I'm all about Hartke lately (and this is just with the Kickback 10 which I run into my Bose system). Even alone, the amp is punchy and sits in the mix where you can hear it but it doesn't annoy (talking about my amp, not my playing).

I will take a hard look at the HyDrives when they arrive if only because if they are a Kickback + Beyond amp Hartke should have a winner.

Can't figure out either why all the recent hate for Hartke, especially the aluminum cone cabs. I bought a 210 combo with the 3500 head in 1994 and that was my head till just this spring. The balanced out and compressor circuit had crapped out about 3 times in the last two years so enough was enough. Ordered a new 3500 (now made in China) and it was total crap. Came out of the box with the compressor not working and wonky graphic EQ ("all or nothing", not linear control response at all). Very regretfully, sent it back and went SWR instead. So, I'm not sure I could recommend their heads anymore but back in the day it was solid stuff and I had none of the reliability issues others have reported up until the past couple of years. One of the things I really grew to appreciate was that you could use the tube gain, solid state gain and Contour knobs to tweak tone going to the board, while keeping the graphic EQ out of the signal (essentially, using the graphic EQ only to tweak my own stage sound). That kind of flexibility still isn't there in a lot of amps today that cost many times more. Also, although the compressor circuit wound up causing me problems, I really, really liked how it worked and never felt the need to use any additional outboard compression.

Cabinet - Bought a 410XL used in about 1994 or 95. I still have it and I LOVE IT. It is the ONLY cabinet that lets me hear the actual notes (and the spaces in between). I cringe every time I have to play through backline Ampeg cabs cause I know I will not get the punch and definition those aluminum cones put out. Playing through paper cones is like playing into a pillow. My personal suspicion is that people who hate Hartke cabs are oftentimes sloppy players who don't like being exposed cause those aluminum drivers put EVERYTHING you're playing right out there. Agree with others here though, the 410XL is one heavy mutha.

Back in the day I used to stack the 210 combo on the 410 cab and run all 6 speakers. For some reason though it never really projected like I thought it should. They always seemed mismatched, with the 210 speakers not having nearly the bottom and balls that came out of the 410. Then one of the 210 drivers blew and I just took the 3500 head out of the combo and ran it with the 410 cab. Mixing the tube and solid state preamps about 50/50 got me real close to the sound I wanted and then once I added a SansAmp BDDI in front of it that was IT. And boy did that rig get loud... I don't think I ever took it past about 3 on the Master.

And of course, nothing beats the look of those aluminum cones under some great stage lighting.

I've got a used Hartke HA3000 head with a Crate 410 cab. For the price, I don't think I could find a better head. It was $90, plus $120 for the cab. It is certainly not a bad rig for the money. Everything is used, and the looks make that fairly obvious. I am pleased with my purchase. This was the first stack I had purchased, and I'm still considering adding another cab to get the full 300W.

oh woot woot. finally a place to show my gear.
I have an Hartke 3500a head and a VX410 cab.
As with others, I find that I could get any sound I wanted out of this amp. :)
My baby get's loud. I never have to got past 3, even when gigging. I tend to favor the tube pre-amp. I'm not sure what it is. And it sounds even better out of 4 10" speakers. My guitarist has VX215 and i can't stand it. I don't know where all this Harkte hate comes from. :eyebrow: Though I've never tried aluminum cones.

sorry for the action shots. I never took pics of my gear. :bassist:

I have a Hartke 7000, I'm using it with an Ampeg BSE410hlf cab, crushing tone, I can never put it past 2 1/2. My only problem is recently I put the head on top of the cab as I usually do, and I turned it on and the sound was getting muffled. I then take the head off and put my hand on top of the cab applying little pressure and it seems like it can't take the weight. Any thoughts on what's going on?

Bought A Hartke A-70 at GC for 199.99 Used a while back, it is so much better then my old rumble 15, were the Rumble would turn into a dry cough the Hartke would shake the kitchen, the plates would get mad, haven't done that in awhile.

The only thing is my guitar playing friend can be drowned out when and if we jam.

Sadly we don't jam anymore, like that.

Anyway, back to Hartke, is there a Hartke Club I could join?
