my question is i have read where a few people changed their stock pre-amp tubes out to something different for a "sweeter" sound. can anybody recommend? and how hard is it to change out?

I changed the stock sovtek tube to a J/J ecc83s tube.

I'm not sure about "sweeter", I describe the sound as "rounder", but it's softer volume than the stock tube, but that's easily rectified by turning up the volume.

It's easy to change.

first remove the cover to expose the innards, you'll spot the tube right away.

Then unscrew the retainer ring holding the tube in place.

then pull out the stock tube and replace with aother 12ax7 or ecc83s tube of your choice,

replace the retainer ring, and replace the cover, and done!

If you're still taking members I play an Ampeg SVT thru 2 Hartke 410XL cabinets (240 watts/ 8 ohms) and have a 1155 1x15 combo that I sold the Hartke head from and use either an Ampeg SVT 3Pro or a Fender BXR300C head.

Dude, this amp is sweet. This is one of the only amps out there that gives you your true bass tone. Great hybrid head. I recommend it

I have a HA4000. It's an ok amp but it doesn't seem to get too loud. But I own a Hartke.

UPDATE: I am now the proud owner of a Hartke LH100. Now that gets loud enough.

I used to run a HA2500 into a VX 2x10! I still use it at home! Count me in.

I did try a LH1K and it was pretty quiet until the level dial was around 6-7, then it went very loud almost immediatly. I thought this could be problem getting the correct level when playing live. Is that the same on your or do you think I tried a defective unit?

How are you running it? Are you running bridged? Active input or passive? In passive input they run rediculously loud, BE CAREFUL, but I run mine active input through one HyDrive 4x10 and it's pretty much never over 5 on the volume dial, sometimes even that is too loud.
