Hartke HD150 speaker suddenly stopped working - help.

Please tell us your suggested method. The OP only has a multimeter.


Most OEMs have a test procedure to follow. We don’t have one.
My suggested method (based on the OP) is to turn it over to someone with the knowledge to troubleshoot.
I’ve fixed lots of old gear based on years of practice-sometimes, not always.without a schematic.
Never with an OEM procedure other than bias and gain setting points.

The bumper sticker on my truck reads “Wiring is not a hobby, call a licensed electrician”.

He’s in Brazil. Getting individual replacement components isn’t always easy. Board swapping can be very cost effective. The old board can be kept for replacement components in case of future failures.

I'll illustrate the matter with a previous example I've came by. One night in 2016 my fender precision deluxe just stopped making sound during a gig. Replacing the 9v was useless, not a cable or amp malfunction. Sent in to a technician, he repaired the problem stating that I would have to replace the pcb board soon enough (in my bass model, there are 4 potenciometers - volume, balance, one that controls highs and lows with two separate turning points - Its PCB includes at least 2 of those, If I recall correctly.

Anyway. The bass was operational but my 9v batteries would dry out too fast, like 1 per week when normally they lasted at least a month.
A replacement costed 4x the US retail price, and since it was a component hard to come by, the diagnosis of the problem was discussed and I had to take part in the process of finding and purchasing this component. Ended up paying only the US retail price for a Fender Deluxe Bass PCB Assy 0056012008 (U$60) and then some for it to be installed and replaced.

Around these parts not only people try to charge you for the service, but purchasing replacement parts can be also profitable for a disonest technician (not disclosing values or not giving the option for the client to purchase the component by himself, providing the specifications of it).

People scavage from every electronic device imaginable due to shortages of supply of components. It is a process both costly and time consuming.

If a technician takes the time to acquire components, they should be compensated for their time. Making money on replacement parts is usually part of any repair business model.

To identify a problem within a product is an expertise of itself, aside from installing and replacing any faulty parts.

To purchase an imported item in a country engulfed in inflation and heavy taxes is a skill of itself as well and most technicians I came by are not qualified enough to deal with this unsurmountable amount of red tape.

Despite being correct as an abstraction, your analysis ignores the fact that here in Brazil the economic and legal landscape is much different and a technician may know his way with a multimeter but doesn't have the best technical solution to escape our horrible post office and tax system. Took 2 days to get that fender pcb from the east coast to LA through USPS. 16 days for a relative of mine to sent it through a post office in brazil (Correios), from one state to another (travelled about 850 km in distance). All of this to avoid paying 4x the price in taxes, and not knowing if it would be delivered anyway, since our national mail system is devoid of any accountability for the most part.

The parts used in that amp are all generally available parts that should be stocked by any qualified service shop.

What we are now talking about is not what is reasonable for a QUALIFIED service shop to be able to provide and the inability to function period.

A technician is under no obligation to source the least expensive part. They are required to quote a repair to the best of their ability. The also will return the defective part. If that part has a core charge, that can be included in the repair or deducted from the bill if returned.
If time is not an issue, the customer can shop for a repair tech. There’s usually a reason for a estimate that is much lower than two or three others.
