I haven't kept up with Hip Hop in the past 10 years or so, but I try to keep my ears and mind open to everything....I've even tried listening to BOTH kinds of music...COUNTRY and WESTERN!

Has anyone hated Hip Hop then eventually liked it?

hated all of it, except kayne's stronger, until i found out about Eminem. (Slim Shady i could care less for)
There's good, bad, and mediocre music in every genre. If you keep your ears (and mind) open and take the time to search, you can find the good.
I'm not a hip hop fan or a Kanye fan, but I think the public is being way too harsh with Kanye West. I realize I am in an extreme minority on this. He made a terrible mistake, but I just feel the punishment is greater than the crime.
He deserves what he gets. What comes around goes around.
Like clock work every year I go on a 3 week long hip hop kick, then for the rest of the year I hardly listen to any. It has happened every year for the last 5 or so.

Well, I'm not defending Kanye West. I don't even like him. I just felt the reaction to what he did was a little excessive.
Modern Hip Hop is shite. I checked out of the game circa 1994, just about the time that atonal crap like Wu-Tang starting clogging up the charts. More modern hip-hop, to my ear, is all an offshoot of that stuff...nobody is ripping off the groundbreaking stuff of Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Ice Cube, or Afrikka Bambatta.

yes..me! I used to hate it cause my (ex) brother in law is to park his car outside my bedroom window and it was BOOM BOOOOM.

Didn't really hate it. That was just not my thing. But i started to dig some mix like rap/rock (RATM), and on the other side some rap singing put into jazz, electrojazz (electrodeluxe; ...).
Then actually, i discover the Beastie Boys than i would never have the idea to listen before..

I used to just HATE it when I heard rap, and it would make me really tense - but now I'm getting to the point where I can just relax because I know in a second the light will turn green and it will be gone...
I can't really say that I like or dislike hip-hop. It's just like any other genre, some that I love and a lot that I don't. I suppose the majority of what I dig would be considered "conscious hip-hop" as would the hip-hop collective that I occasionally gig/record for.
And just because I was just listening to it, here's some hip-hop I dig. From Blackalicous - featuring Gift of Gab aka Tim Parker from my high school (he was a senior when I was a freshman) - one of the best MCs in the business IMO.

yes... well, no - more like early 80's. (I know without looking that "I am the Man" by Anthrax was done in 1984 and even has lyrics that make reference to "they said rap and metal could never mix...")
I will make it my #1 goal in 2010 that any time I attempt sarcasm at Talkbass, I will use one those god forsaken "smiley" things, lest there be any confusion.
My big problem with hip-hop is the quality of live performances, although I know that that extends to pretty much every genre, it seems to be especially bad in hip-hop. I've heard some stuff that was pretty good, with a nice complex beat, and great hooks in the vocals, and then you see clips of them live and it's just a horrendous trainwreck. I mean, I'm hardly a great musician, but I can find the downbeat with much more regularity than a lot of those guys.
I did have a room-mate at one point who was very into Tupac, and played his stuff a lot, I started off cringing whenever he would pop it in, but after a couple of months I would actually play it of my own volition occaisionally. Other than that I have pretty much always loved Beastie Boys since Check your Head, I still consider that one of the 90's albums that has stood the test of time better than most.
