i gotta chime in as a white kid who came up project. at home i got hank snow and marty robbins from my dad. bill withers and stevie wonder from my mom. sabbath from one brother and chicago from another and i personally came up a fan of punk rock. i had alot of music variation rooted strongly in rock and soul from my house...when i walked outside it was emerrsed in KRS-1 Too short 2 live crew, tribe called quest and so on.
i grew up on it all and have love for it. when i started playing music i naturally started with my first love punk rock but i couldnt deny all of my influences and hip hop may be the ONLY music outlet that could let me take something from every type of music that has built my foundation and make my own thing. nothing else allows that kind of breathing room.
when im tired of listening to my rock, metal , punk ect records hip hop is a life saver in a sea of guitar overload nd vice versa when im all bassed/rap out i could just throw on a Clutch cd and be good.
its good to be proficient and well versed in alot of things when it comes to being a musician. dont pigeon hole yourself.
i play bass and guitar. i also DJ and produce and play trombone. its nice to go into the studio and be able to work the tables, the mpc (and several othe misc smaplers and drum machines), the boards, protools, bass and guitar. if it wasnt for hip hop id probably have limited knowledge of anything but stringed instruments.
not to mention i have a mega NASTY record collection most guys would kill for
embrace everything you can and youll be better off in the long run.
and for the guys who say you cant have a foot in both worlds... you come to me when you have Rick Ruben's money and Danzig, Slayer, Johnny Cash, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Jay-Z and countless other gold and platinum albums lining your walls
