Has anyone tried SX basses

...just spotted the following passage in a recent thread about the new MIM Fender basses:
"they need alittle work such as set up ,fret edges cleaned up,stuff they dont take the time to do to keep the cost down,but you can turn one into a good player with alittle work,now electronics and hardware"

MIMs are now in the mid-$600s. Can somebody explain why (again) buying one is a practical move?

I played a brand new MIA Fender P at GC two weeks ago that fits that description as well, I was very unimpressed.

Don't get me wrong, I have a few MIMs - I bought my first MIM-J new in 1992 - the year they introduced the line. It cost me $260 brand new. It's a really nice bass - beautiful neck profile, vintage style frets - but in the "bang for the buck" department my SX SJB-75 blows it away. When I look at the fit and finish on both instruments, the SX looks more professionally done. The woods are better, too.

I have a 98 MIM Fender P as well, my SX's are simply better basses.

Raisin Bran? Aw dang, I don't eat Raisin Bran. :D

I for one love that they are so seemingly inexpensive! But they are not. Because for many of us, one bass turns into 3 or 4 of them, then a Brice or two....Rondo makes waaay more money off guys like me than if they sold me one bass at 5 times the price.

Buy one and find out. As has been said here by multiple people, even Fender purists, the MIM line has many of the same issues that some SX basses have. I have no issue whatsoever about spending some cash for a fretjob on ANY bass under 6 or 800 dollars in cost. Do you wanna know why some of the better custom/boutique builders plek their basses or spend the time to do a master job on the neck? Because for a $2,000 plus bass, it better feel like gold in your hands.

My thing about Sx is, you buy the bass, if you like it, you play it. But, if a guy bought an SX, had the neck done, and replaced everything, that guy would have a bass with the same quality hardware and electronics as any other bass out there.

I am doing that with my Geddy Clone. When I am done, it will be an SX neck and an SX body and pickguard. everything else will be genuine Fender aside from the strings, straplocks and BAII bridge. But I will have spent, maybe, maybe 450 dollars on this bass. A bass that will play and sound EXACTLY like a Fender. For less than half price! And I did it myself!

See if it is for you or not. No prob with being skeptical, but if you are curious, check one out.

I currently own an "SX" p bass copy. I want upgrade the bridge and tuners. The tuners will not be a problem, but (and I already bought a replacement), I'm told that putting a Schaller BA2 on it is not worth it. Two of my local shops don't want to do it. Telling me the bridge won't line up correctly. WTH? What do you all think?

On [This invalid link has been removed] page look for SX Bridges near the bottom of the page. Hope it helps. :cool:

If it saves you any time, the owner (Brian) informed me that the OEM Deluxe models line up with the existing SX bridge mounting holes. You may want to contact Brian with any further questions. :cool:
