Has Fender ever offered a 5-string with a narrow neck and tight string spacing?

Are the Vintage Modified J and P V 18mm? Pretty sure they have 1.875” nut width though.
Maybe I’ll look into budget MIJ brands.

Yes! The Fender HM V. I owned one. Spacing was about 16mm.
Fender Elite’s have the different notches in the bridge that allow tighter string spacing if you want it. Not 18mm but not super far off…
Nut width 43mm (1.7") but 18.5mm spacing at the bridge:

The MIM Deluxe Active Jazz has a string spacing of 17 mm and nut width of 1 7/8". Close to what you are looking for. I'm not sure how long they made it, but I used to own one:

I don't like Fender five string basses. If you do, this may be a good option. Please note, I am not talking about the American Deluxe Active Jazz. I am talking about the Mexican version made from 1998-2015.

YES they did. Try the Fender MB-5, with neck at 1.75, and I believe the spacing is 16mm. The made-in-Japan ones (made in 1994-95 -see mine below) get better reviews than the Indonesian Squier reissues. Mine is very light and well-balanced.

I've owned a cou[le of these (I still have one, that's need of a restoration), as well as an HMIV. These are pretty amazing basses.

I generally like this MIM Active Deluxe Jazz Bass V. The B string is a bit sloppy, but I've tried far worse Fender 5 strings in that regard. The pickups despite active circuitry have really low output, and I ALWAYS use this bass in with a boost pedal. This bass was my main bass for a Modern Country band for a while, until I put it on "backup status" that stays at the practice spot until gigs, and my main bass now for that band is an Active Player Deluxe Jazz Bass V. The necks on both of those instruments differ a noticeable amount, but it doesn't bother me.
The Active Deluxe Jazz Bass here came in "Vintage White" which really looks like pastel yellow, and nothing "white" about it. Also Candy Apple Red, and a Sunburst. Maybe two-tone Sunburst. I can't remember. There were a few future iterations that came in Surf Green, and perhaps another color....
I used to have one and kinda regret letting it go, got it for next to nothing like 15 years ago and didn’t appreciate how cool it was at the time, really nice playing bass!
I always wanted one of those!
I wonder if one can be built with Warmoth or comparable after market parts?
