Hate to confess this.

try 63CS pups, just did a PJ build with those..they are very nice.. the SD's are good and have a very generic, bright sounding P tone, but they are good nonetheless. Unfortunately i dont own a MM or a Stingray to compare....

Hate to confess this, but I prefer the sound of my $299 Sterling Ray 4 over my Fender P. The Fender P has had EMG active pickups, just swapped the pickups / wiring with Seymour Duncan Quarter pounders..it sounds best as it ever had since I have owned it. But i still prefer the sound of the Ray4. Maybe I won't get kicked off talkbass for saying that...

Nothing wrong with liking the Ray4 more.

No you won’t get kicked off of Talkbass, but more than likely you will lose your Fender Fan membership credentials.

You won't get kicked off but you're likely to be roundly ridiculed.
....just not by me!

Regardless of what anyone tells you on the internet or in person (especially on the bandstand), you should like what you like. There's absolutely no rule that says your preferences have to match anyone else's and you shouldn't feel the need to apologize or "confess" if your preferences don't fall in line with price points, trends or various other fetishes that gear heads like to assign to things. Play your bass. Have fun. Make music.

Somebody has... an opinion? Sound the alarm! Ready the pitchforks!

(seriously, though, I get it. I quite like my SUB Ray4 for what it does- I recently used it on a session and it nailed what I was looking for. I even left my prized '78 P at home. There are other gigs where the P gets the call instead, but the Ray was the best tool for the job, and that's okay.)

Say you had two girlfriends. One is a lot of fun to hang out with, and she likes simple dates. The other is high maintenance; a pain to hang out with who demands you take her to stuffy, expensive places for dinner.

Would anyone think less of you for dumping the diva?

2 completely different sounds bro.

Have you played both of them on stage?

The only time you will ever know what your bass sounds like, is to play it with other people.

As most users are saying on this forum, I completely agree with you! Play what you like and prefer, I prefer the lesser know ESP/LTD basses and guitars then some other companies. I also am planning on getting a Phil Jones amp which compare to some other prefable brands but I enjoy PJ more imo, and a G&L L2000, after trying that I like my j-bass but prefer some of these models more lol! Playing something because YOU like the look and feel is way more important then the general opinionated unless of course there was a serious issue like poor product or faulty issues. Enjoy!!!
