have the D's toppled the SVT's?

With a response like that, you may not have a bruised ego, but your feathers are definitely ruffled. I am not here to start a fight/ argument with anyone. I am stating an opinion. I already apologized in my last post, what more do you want from me? You also have the right to keep scrolling if you don't like what someone posts. And on that note...

Kindest regards

Backhanded apologies don't really count.

Also don't lie. You were absolutely trying to start a fight. No one calls other people "sheeple" and expects not to.

What exactly is wrong with buying an amp because players you dig use them? That's a phase many of us grow out of but one we All go through. I've been playing over forty years and a few months ago bought an amp after hearing one of my primary influences sounding ****ing awesome through one. I guess I could be accused of mindlessly falling into step behind a player I'm not ashamed to say is a bona fide hero but the bottom line is I sound awesome through this amp too. I'd rather be an awesome sounding sheeple than visionary maverick who sounds like ass.

C'mon folks; let's be nice.

There is SO much involved in the whole signal chain, that there is zero chance to make categorical statements.

In my case, I base a lot of my amp choice on the suitability of the amp to my 5 string, which is an early Hollywood Tobias. Why? Well, that bass has phenomenal tone; but, with its Bart TCT preamp, it is intrinsically very strongly voiced. So, some amps that play really well with Fender instruments don't play well with my 5. The ONLY 3 amps I've found which naturally yin yang with it are the SVT, the Demeter VTBP-201 preamp, and the new Bergantino B|Amp.

But, that applies to the voicing on that particular bass. I've simply decided I'm willing to work around it. If I played a Fender as my only bass, I might well come to different conclusions.

Anyhow, let's respect each other's situations and try to see what we can learn from each other. IMO. The amp you play is presumably the best you've found for your instrument. Criticizing another player's choice, tube or SS, is quite likely to be uninformed. YMMV and Carry On.

The ONE time I was able to play an SVT at GC (because all other times, & there were MANY, it was busted) I'd take a Tone Hammer sound over that.
There is a lot of appeal to the fact that all Tone Hammers or any other production class D's for the most part sound the same as every other of the same model. SVT's can range from Voice Of God to unusable mud but oh man when you get a good one.....

It's like this: To find a great tube amp you have to be prepared to commit to a few that won't be "the one", make some compromises, spend a few bucks, learn as you go and exercise patience to experience the magic....kinda like finding (and keeping) a great woman or man.

SS amps on the other hand are safe, reliable, less expensive, easier to handle and do the job. But ultimately they lack some essential magic....more like rubbing one out.

because playing an amp at GC would be a true test of what the amp is capable of. SVTs aren' muddy, if anythingit was probably the cabinet. not saying that you'd prefer the SVT 9ver the TH in another context just that your point of reference isn't great.

That's because they need to have redundant amps, so one can always be in the shop, LOL.

Disclaimer:
I'm kidding, no amp is that faulty, but for some reason the guy at Sam Ash told me he has more than two Ampegs & has to pick the one that's currently working.
No, he wasn't trying to divert me from buying an Ampeg for something else at the time.

The one that's always faulty at GC, well they've told me they send it off for repairs about every 6 weeks, and then after a month it fails again.
However, I don't know how true any of these stories are.

Meanwhile, there is a meme flying around the Tube amp repair groups of a guy with cash in his hands & he's saying, "Just fix my Ampeg before my friends find out it's broken again!".

Now we are getting into BS territory.

No one likes having gear they use and like slagged off, and then insulting them for factually defending it or pointing out that we have different needs a goals is infantile.

I have an SVT, a 'good' one, in other words a properly maintained one, and it rules the stage. Mine gets to flex its muscles where it was designed for, on stage, and I honestly don't give a crap what bedroom
players think about it because they have different needs and expectations from their gear.

Perhaps I am being over sensitive, perhaps every once in a while I get tired of yahoos who need to knock things they don't understand. This is not a personal attack on any one person, but the tendency exists here and sometimes enough is enough.

So if you don't rock an SVT you're just a bedroom bass player, is that what you're saying?
My little micro amp and 2 1x12s was more then enough for last nights gig. I can't remember the last time my amp was in my bedroom but I'd say it was over 20 years ago

Speak for yourself. I never bought any amp out of fan emulation.

Oh c'mon, I didn't buy the damned amp because Jack Casady was using it he just happened to be the guy I heard playing one for the first time. It could have been YOU using it and my reaction would have been the same. My point was that because I admire the guy someone could cynically accuse me of buying it to be just like my hero and be dead wrong.

And are you honestly going to say that when you were a young player your taste in gear wasn't ever influenced by the players you were emulating? I grew out of that many years ago and I'll assume you have too. But it would be virtually impossible starting out to know **** all about gear and not have your tastes and desires be influenced by the equipment of players you looked up to. If you're saying you really never ever have been so influenced at any point I'd have to wonder what bizarrely isolated circumstance you evolved in.

Maybe you missed the LOL at the end of my post. Should I have added an emoticon for effect?

Oops, my mistake. I should have posted "joking" at the end instead of LOL, because then it seems like I'm laughing at you instead of making a joke.

Wow, this is like a Jaco thread.
I currently own a variety of amps, including a '72 SVT rig. It is heavy. It is cumbersome. At my age (creak, groan) the logistics of moving it around are very real considerations. As a result it has been essentially relegated to duty as the world's largest practice amp. The ground that is my sporadic and smaller gigs has been ceded to a pair of Ampeg B100Rs - not exactly lightweights either, but they do an admirable job of sounding like an Ampeg tube amp, and are eminently more manageable.
But I know better than to get rid of the SVT. Even at bedroom (basement) volume it is a glorious, hallmark tone. It is there if I need it, and I like that security. Some people aren't into it because it doesn't suit their style - and that's okay.
I do not own a Class-D bass amp. The ones I have played have not impressed me. Maybe someday...
