Have You Ever Forgotten Your Bass?

Left my gig bag in a parking lot one night after a gig. Got a call from some workers the next day who had picked it up. Thank goodness it had my name and number on it. They were at a local fast food joint with it in their work van. Nice to run into honest folks like that.

No but, I did chose not to bring a back-up once and that guy Murphy reared his ugly head
Oy, I hate that guy!

Over the last 40 years, I've been lucky, never forgot my bass. I did get to the gig one time, opened up my case expecting to see my good old Precision, only to find my 80s Kramer metal-neck bass (with extremely dead strings) instead. GAAH! NOT THE SAME AT ALL!!! Who the F put THAT in there???

Oh, yeah... me. D'oh!

Hate to admit it, but happened to me twice. Recently... Must be Alzheimers kicking in....

I took all my stuff to work so I could go straight to the gig. Put my bass in a closet at work, didn't want to leave it in the hot car all day. Running late at work, leave in a hurry, of course, leave the bass in the closet. Luckily I remembered in time.... to go home to get a backup and still make the gig.

Then just last month... Loaded the car, left the bass for last. Something distracted me, off I go. Got off the freeway thinking, I don't remember loading the bass... had to go all the way home, ended up being late to loadin, but had enough time to make the start time, had to really rush setting up.

Good reason to always leave early... and doublecheck your load...

A couple of months ago we had two gigs for the same guy, both on fantasy/record fairs.
The first one was supposed to be an acoustic gig so I just brought my bass with me. When we got there, there turned out to be a PA so we had to borrow all kinds of stuff from the other guy that was playing there.

There was supposed to be a PA at the second gig as well so I brought my electric bass but when we got there...nothing...
Thank god the same guy from the first gig showed up with his own PA so he saved us again.

Forgot to bring my kick pedal to a drumming audition once. The audition was at one of the band members houses and his kid had a toy drum set. He let me hook the pedal from that to my bass drum. It was bent all to **** when we finished. Didn't get that gig, obviously. :rollno:

I've never actually forgotten my bass; but I HAVE had dreams (nightmares?!) where I got to a gig and realized I forgot my bass. That sucks too, but it's such a relief when you wake up and realize it was just a bad dream... :D

Forgot to bring a bass to a gig once in the mid 80's. Wasn't a disaster because it was for a regular Monday night gig at place a couple of blocks from from my apt. Between a ton of gigs and regularly eating dinner there over the previous year, I was constantly in and out of the place.

Once, a long, long time ago. I was playing in a cover band that had gotten an on-air gig on the Wake Forest radio station (WFDD). We all piled into a van, went to the gig, played, then started loading up for the trip home. The door to the station wouldn't stay open, so I propped it open with my bass in case as we loaded. Job done, we headed home. We were unpacking the van when I realized what happened - drove back like a madman to find the bass still there, holding that door open. Whew!!

I've never done it with my bass, but I leave my acoustic guitar in class at school all the time. I'll go to the nesxt class and realize I forgot it.I'm not worried about theft, because my school's really small and my guitar is very distinctive,as I'm one of the only kids who has one.

One of our guitarists forgot his guitar on a gig. We were about 3 hours from home, but 30 minutes from SF, where a college friend of mine agreed to loan his goldtop Les Paul. I madly drove up to the city to get the guitar, and the guitarist played the first set on my bass. The band was glad to see me return - the guy played some "interesting" bass lines!

Not for gig but once when going to rehearsal straight from work I almost forgot my bass on the overheard rack of the commuter train. Got off the train, started walking towards the car when a little voice said "Hey did you forget something......."

Retrieved it just before they sent the train to the yard.

I usually forget the power leads (always to something different!)

However, I do know of a band that were travelling home by bus, and left the Double Bass on it when they got off. They didn't realise until the next day, and luckily got it back from the lost and found (with a lot of smirking from the employees there!)
