I don't name my basses myself, but a few of my basses have been given names from my bandmembers, and they stuck.
The Ken Smith BSR5 in is called "Woody".
The G&L 2500 is called "Bowlingball" because of it's finish.
The '69 Jazz is called "Funkmachine". Again they gave it the name and they never knew Jamerson called his P that.
The '80 Musicman Sabre is called "Oliver". I had a string of bad luck where things of mine were breaking and eqipment at a show went wrong, the same week I aquired the bass. The bad luck cousin from the Brady Bunch tv show was named Oliver, so that's how it came to be.
The '82 Precision bass my uncle gave me is called "Armando"...my uncle's name

My MIM Midnight Wine Precision is named Cherry, and my Candy Tangerine MIA Deluxe Jazz is named Candy. Cherry and Candy...they're like pornstar names.

Two years ago, when I got my Roscoe, I named it because it was so beautiful. I started a thread about naming my bass. by the time the thread was finished, I realized how dopey it was to arbitrarily name my bass. A bass has to have some distinguishing characteristic or a story to go with it in order to have a name that makes scence. It's like giving yourself a nick name. You just can't give yourself a nick name. There has to be a reason for it.
My Ibanez is the "Flyin' Lion" because the bass had this hideous metal emblem nailed into it that was a lion with wings. The guy who had it before me nailed it to the bass. OK, now that's a story and a reason for a name. But just calling your bass Shirley is just silly--- unless the bass was knocked over and fell on top of you while you lost your virginity to a girl named Shirley. Now that's a story and therefore a good name.

My Swamp Ash Corvette is called Margot, simply because I needed to name here, and Margot is the only blond girl I know that agrees with me naming my bass after her.
Lillerød is the little red BassLab STD.
LoW (Light of the World) is the other one, because it is LightWave powered, light coloured woods, light weight and dedicated to the Light (a.k.a. Jesus Christ).

I'm a beginner so alls i have is a special edition squier affinity jazz bass. even tho its only squier, its pretty frickin tight. anyways, I call it chainsaw. just because i can.

- Full disclosure, I'm a certified Fender technician working in a music store that carries Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez products among others.
My old Ibanez SR800 was black, and named Yuri. My knock-off P-bass was red, and named Kei. Old school anime fans will know why.
The Thumb 5 I use is nicknamed, "The Tank" because it is. I have a guitar named "Rachel" because that's what she told me her name was. Unfortunately, despite years of faithful service, my Steinberger is still called "my Steinberger", and my DB hasn't yet revealed a name to me. Ah, well. I call my baritone JJ, because it's a JJ, and the guitarist in one of my bands is named JJ, and I love confusing him by talking to my axe out loud

No.. I refer to my green spector as hulk occasionally though since it's green heavy and audibly monstrous.
I often refer to my current main bass, a solid-gloss finish dark plum purple Modulus Flea J 5, as "Lucritia", after the Blood Sweat and Tears song, "Lucritia MacEvil." 
My tongue oiled koa Carvin 5-string was the "Havoc Staff." I named it after Skeletor's main weapon.
My first bass, a late 80's gloss black, Squier 5-string w/ a P&J pickup configuration, no pickguard, longish top horn, and seriously pointy headstock, was dubbed, "The Spear.

I have to agree. While my first and second basses were arbitrarily named, my third bass was named based on her defining characteristics (from Devilina to Lina.)
My recently acquired Warwick Corvette has proven the hardest to name. I thought about naming her "Serendipity" since it was a serendipitous string of events that led her to me but it just doesn't fit right with her mojo and personality. For now it's my Warwick, but this is a bass where I need to have her for a while, create some memories and just be patient and let the right name come and not force it.
Oh yeah, my housemate named his Yamaha BB-series 5-string Count Bassy (as a play on Count Basie.)

My old Jazz Bass is "Betsy".
It's been around the world with me and never once complained.
Dunno why I call her Betsy, I just always have. None of my other basses have names, but I have been calling my black Sadowsky 4 "Blackie" as of late.

I named my main bass [a 93 Ibanez SR 505] "ol' blue" [the bass actually is teal] because saying "the 505" gets old, and I also have two other Ibanezes and another five string so this lowers the confusion level.
no names yet, no real stories. so I might ry and channel the bass to find out it's name.
