Hearing Loss and Ear Plugs

Anybody use those aluminum/titanium filters, the Isolates or whatever?

going through all these threads is time consuming....

I have old Westone ear plugs that cut either -15db or -25 DB that I use when it gets too loud. Is there any other kind of custom in ear plugs that allow you to hear the bass better while cutting down on the drums and electric guitars?

Sorry if this is a too often asked question but there's so many post here...

Thanks.

I have a pair of the Etymotics as well - these: Etymotic Research ETY-Plugs High Fidelity Earplugs - Standard Fit I now use IEMs with the band, but I keep these in my bass case, because some of the bigger places we have have a DJ between sets who gets intensely loud. These allow you to hear the music pretty well. I am very happy with them.

You can spend more for customs. I played with a guitarist who did that, and was very happy - but they are not cheap.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

When I had custom ear plugs made, I asked for a set without filters. Basically a solid piece of rubber(or whatever they're made of.) These cutoff the high and pretty much leave the bass/low mids. See my previous post:

The Flare Isolates look interesting, but I'm a little dismayed by not being able to find any hard data on them. I saw one chart that claimed up to 50 db attenuation on their Kickstarter page, but they were using a signal that was only 80 db to begin with. And they charge double for titanium earplugs when the regular aluminum plugs do pretty much the same job. So if anyone knows where hard data exists on them, please link me.

ime they are flatter and quite a bit quieter than the Etymotics. Ety squash the highs a little too much but comfy and whatyagonnado for twenty bucks can't be beat. I reckon you should give these newfangled ones a shot if you are wanting a bit more attenuation.

Interesting. I do notice that the Etys leave more bass response in than treble and mids. When you say the Etys are more comfy, do you mean the Flares aren't very comfy?

I recently tried the flares - I went back to my Etys. The flares are about the same as the cheap foam one if you seat them in your ears properly. The first couple times I used them I liked them but that was because I didn't have them pushed in properly. I'm trying the Earasers next.
I have to admit that earplugs who use reducing the bass response more than other plugs as a selling point are not much of a selling point for me. It's what I like about the Etys.
