I've come to the conclusion that you also believe that reading won't help you write and having a brain won't help you think.
when i listen to music, it help me on the bass. i learned totally by ear with no lessons. now when i listen to music, i can hear a bass line and if its not real complicated, i can play it immediately on the bass, all those years transposing what my ears hear into where it goes on the fretboard have turned around, now i can hear something and i already know which strings and frets to play before i pickup the bass. i would like to see the wisecrackers do this ... johnny a. staind
I haven't progressed to the level you are describing, but progress is being made. I do depend on playing by ear a lot anyway.
Learning to play bass at the late age of 35,working a full time job and running a small buisness with 2 kids and a wife doesn't allow me the time or paitence to learn by ear or study theory like I should,so I have learned most of the 100 or so songs I know from tab.
I play in 2 different cover bands and feel that I have a good ear for levels and tones but still not where I should be for notes.
I get real musicians that say "hey lets get together and jam",wish that I could but I'm just not there yet.
I do play most everything note for note so I probobaly know more than I think I just can't label it.
If you can play 100 songs note-perfect, I'd say that's a pretty good thing.
No, you all missed the point. Music is like language impossible to learn by ear, so you might as well start learning sign language.

I've come to this conclusion after reading professionals here on the board several times has claimed that listening to music won't help you get better on the bass.
