HEELYS

My 7 year old has a pair and she loves them, but then again.. She's also 7.

She doesn't use them to annoy people or anything just digs being able to glide around.. She also understands the rules. The wheels come out when she's at school and, if she does get into trouble with them, it's back to regular shoes before she can bat an eye.

She's fallen a couple of times, but she's actually pretty good on them. I don't think I've ever seen anyone older than 11 wearing them though..

Well I can see that a 7-year old girl doing this could be "sweet and endearing" :p ...?

But it's when you get the "mall rats" of 11-12 doing it to, that they become a severe irritant...:spit:

I wouldn't wear Heelys on a *dare*. I like my bones intact and my head functioning properly.

My 8 y.o. daughter wants a pair. My question to her: Where will you play with them? We have a rutted caliche driveway. She said I could take her to the high school parking lot to use them. I told her that I'm not buying shoes that require driving somewhere to be used.

Cherie...Old Fart ;)

Anybody got em?

I bought a pair, tried them for about a half an hour, nearly killed myself - I'm determined, but I don't have the time right now.

If ya got em, how long did it take to get used to them, and how do I get over all those little kids making me look like an idiot because they don't seem to have any problems at all.

If ya don't know what I'm talking about I'm talking about this Invalid Link Removed .

I hate those things, my son had them. He's been forbidden to wear them now. He's a very high level soccer player and started having achilles tendon problems, due to the heelys making him walk on his toes. I know it's just my opinion, but those things are hella gay. Plus, when you walk in them, they make you look a little light in the loafers

Damn! I gotta say I'm kinda surprised at how uptight and close minded a lot of you guys are. Wasn't expecting this kind of response. What the hell is sad, or "gay" about adding a little fun to yer life? I'm glad I don't limit myself like it seems some of you do.

Some guys learned what Heelys are by reading this thread. For me, today's "Ya learn something new everyday!" moment came when I read your post and had to look up "caliche" on Merriam-Webster's website.

Dave... Old fart who knows about kid's footware but apparently doesn't know anything about driveway technology.

:D :)

I think that people who are getting used to them look like dorks. Rolling in a circle =/= cool. People who are used to them and it is just second nature can pull it off though. They look like they would be verry usefull for long tiled hallways. I think the trick to using them is to put the toe of your back foor on the heel of your front foot.

Indeed. Assimilate the heelys or be labeled uptight and closeminded.

Somebody pull me around in a Radio Flyer. Man, that would be fun.

Well I think you missed the point on the 'gay' thing - so buzzbass was saying it forces the wearer, to walk up on their toes in a kind of mincing walk associated with "camp" behaviour...:eyebrow:

I think the "sad" commment was about middle-aged men thinking they can somehow regain their youth, by jumping on every trend aimed at 12-14 year-old kids...:hmm:

I think my 11 year old nephew would be able to teach you how to work em.

I talked to my nephew to find out how he got it.

He said he practiced by holding on to the couch, while kicking up his toes to let the wheels roll. After a couple of spills, he was ready to take to the streets.
He said the key was the kick. Can't do it so fast that you lose balance, and so slow that you can't get the wheels rolling. hangin on to the couch was the key to helping him get the right feel. He also said be careful when you try to stop, because if you put your toes down too fast, you'll spill. Wait until you naturally slow down, or sorta run to regain your balance.

He didn't do a good job of explaining how to turn and stuff, he says it comes natural.

He did wonder who Joe Nerve was, so I showed him a pic of you in the "glasses". He definitely thought the heelys would help you be a cool kid.;)

At the HS I work at they have a new section in the school paper, "Guess the Teacher" - where they post a childhood pic of 2 teachers and the kids win a prize if they can guess who they are.

Yep - I did it... :D school paper comes out in about a week. I set myself up bigtime with this one.

Whatever happened to getting rollerblades? The same parents who won't let their kids get on a pair of skates without helmets and pads will let their little kids roll around in the store.

I just don't like them rolling around in my general area. I tend to dislike unruly kids and their bad parents to begin with, but to give them skates so they can skate in areas generally known as non-acceptable places to skate?
