Help dress me up, please.

The broads love this look, and no dudes will mess with you, except the sheriff.

So I was trying to decide what strings to put on my bass. Naturally, I went to my automechanic to get advice...

Or, less sarcastically, if you ask bass players for fashion advice, they will agree that you shouldn't wear a hat, that cargo shorts probably aren't a good idea and you should wear socks with your sandals. Find a reputable men's wear shop and take your requirements with you. Be sure to explain exactly what you need - clothes suitable for wearing on stage with a bass on. That will be your best advice.

otherwise, get your wife, gf, female bff, or a gay friend and have them shop w you. If they know their stuff, all you have to do is stand there and try on clothes as they bring em. Thrift stores are also excellent for finding cool, stylish and gig worthy fits

I'm not sold on the whole "have a woman or a gay guy pick out your clothing" advice. It could work, but none of these people actually wear the sort of clothing that OP needs (I assume that when a gay friend is advised here, people are indicating a stereotypical flamboyant one). OP doesn't need to get the latest fashions and I don't think he wants to look fabulous.

Going to the likes of Brooks Brothers or J Press and explaining what he needs is likely to produce good results, but it will likely be very expensive. Also, this is more like one mechanic asking other mechanics about a custom paint job for his car.

I bought a white suit for $65 for a costume party that I went to (my wife and I dressed up as Mr. Rourke and Tattoo from Fantasy Island) and that has been my new go-to for gig attire. The rest of the band wears jeans and black t-shirts but to me that's boring. They put up with my dressing up.

Leisure Suit Larry approves.

I agree with others who say talkbass is a horrible place to ask for wardrobe advice.

Avoid black as it tends to give off a greenish sheen under some lighting. Stick with the dark grays and navy blues. A dark navy blue tux will appear black under stage lighting.

Riis

Yes. The color you want is called midnight blue. It's the correct color for a tuxedo as it's actually darker than black under bright lighting.

Remember, there many different kinds of suits and the ones made for bankers and lawyers are not what you want to wear as an entertainer.

New band plays weddings and corporate events. They don't wear tuxedos, and said they want to up their fashion game and start moving away from the traditional black suits.

I have to go buy clothes this week.

When I asked for help they advised me to look at what the Jimmy Fallon band is wearing, or Justin Timberlake. Every picture I see of those guys - they're wearing black suits.

I know nothing about style. I wear black jeans, black T-shirts, and black boots when I play. I wear jeans and Ts for everything else in my life outside of weddings and funerals.

I know I can ask the band to be more specific, but I'd rather ask the fine folks at Talkbass first.

Can you help dress me as stylishly as possible? I know absolutely nothing style in 2017. The last time I bought stylish dress clothes they looked like this....

Yes! Yes you do. But in you're defense I've been out there and there is a reason I'm in jeans 90% of the time. Have you looked at modern men's fashion lately?!
Stuff is hideous!
Good luck!
Black button up shirt
Black tie
Black dress pants

Vinzenz Benjamin always looks cool. Google him. He seems to wear jeans a lot but you can switch that to slacks. The loose tie he frequently sports is dressy without be too much. It's fortunate for us fit people who can still dress a bit inappropriately young and not look ridiculous.

I would say a suit (in any color that isn't too virulent) is ok. But dont use the singers suit it looks horrible.

To be honest, at a wedding it should mostly be suit or blazer

Be careful with the primary colors unless you are very cool otherwise you risk coming off more as Liberace or a TV sports reporter rather than Questlove.
