This is an interesting thread for me, as I just dropped off my 1960 P bass at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, where it was looked over and verified as an all original body, but with a later/aftermarket tort pickguard. Restorative repair work is getting underway, and once that's done, I'd like to think about cosmetics a bit.

That aftermarket pickguard frees me up to think about replacing it, since it's not in good shape by any measure, and also, the bass is in a rather dire need of a quality refinish. So I shan't ask here and risk threadjacking, but will instead look with intrigue at the various combos posted.

Great choices - and score on the original green guard! Kudos on the rescue. Well worth it. I love the Burgundy Mist myself (had an original '65 Jazz with matching headstock). The Teal Green Metallic is scarce and a personal favorite but I don't think it was available that early and you already have green covered - same with Sherwood Green (though period correct) and the different blues like Ice Blue Metallic (also later, I think) once they start to yellow. Otherwise, Charcoal Frost or Inca Silver as others have mentioned are terrific choices.

I’d second Inca Silver.
I’m aware* of a ‘62 Precision that is original apart from a bad refinish/tuners/pick guard swap. It’s a nice playing/sounding bass. Periodically I’m tempted to buy it and fix it up in Inca Silver. But then I chicken out and just stick with my faithful old ‘75.
Best wishes and enjoy!

*for sale at an slightly optimistic price.

Won’t it lose value when you refinish it? I’m a fan of natural vintage relic look and would never refinish a vintage instrument myself. That said, go sonic blue if you’re going through with it!
It looks like the original finish doesn't exist anymore so it's the perfect instrument for a good refinish.

"Whatever you do, please have the stones to that headstock as-is. Everyone and their mom has a matching headstock these days... but Fender custom colors (especially if you can find someone to do an aged version) will look particularly nice with all that original hardware and a gorgeous honey headstock."

What a great problem to have!

Shoreline for me.
