Help me get back up to speed on the new innovative stuff

Oh yeah, many of them have caused me to kill to drown out the voices in my head. But a couple of them have been really cool. I know I could find a use for a Pitchfactor or even a Nocto Loco, for example. Moogerfooger slightly less. And a far as synths go, I'd just like to find one that has good sounds AND good tracking. Looks like you get either or at this point. But even if I can't use them, it's so great to be able to hear examples of people using them. In the old days, all we had were albums to hear pedals being used. I think this intranet thing may catch on.

Wish I could look up more stuff, but this hotel has crap internet speed now because of a Unitarian convention that's hogging the bandwidth. Hope it gets back to normal tomorrow.

Check out the Source Audio / Soundblox pedals (eg Tri Mod Wah) you can control them by wearing a Hot Hand controller, a wireless ring with a built in accelerometer that you use like an expression pedal.

Also the 'option knob' for a replacement winged pedal knob you can manipulate with your foot, or the T.I.P. 3rd Hand.

Saw a vid on those last week, Danny. Very cool and innovative.

Know what would be cool? An octaver that makes it sound like you're octave'd up or down but retains the pitch of the actual note you're playing, and lets you double it with a clean sound. Does the Whamy Pedal do that? Doesn't look like the Pitchfactor does.

All I want is:
* A pedal that will give me an octave up that tracks with reasonable playing speed, and doesn't sound artificial
* A pedal I can plug into and sound like a old fashioned, monophonic Minimoog.

We put a man on the moon 38 years ago and you can't give me these 2 simple things?

We do.


They are called computers. You use them with you live rig if you want all these things.

I don't trust computers for live work. I just barely trust effects. I know it's all going that way eventually, but it's still very unstable now. Even that standalone plug-in controller is rumored to be a big PITA, too. Hope they get it before I'm dead ;)

If I need to use a computer (and its' associated hassles) I would just assume play a synth.
Want the simplicty and immediate gratification of a pedal.
I would think doable, but probably not enough of a market to justify R&D costs of a potentialy expensive unit that wouldn't appeal to the masses.

I'll say this until my dying day, but seriously, try the full-size POG. Yes, the octave up can get digital and chirpy. That's when you use the LPF slider like a blade to cut out all of that crap. And you're left with a nice, CLEAN, mellow octave-up. IMO, the Micro Pog is next to useless since they eliminated the LPF.

sounds like what the boss PS-3 can do? as in retain original note and play with octave up as well? only problem is its harder to get it 'clean' as the Ps-3 tends to make everything warbly the higher up the pitch shift is...

as mentioned before the noise box is a fantastical peice of work,... only problem I have is hard trying to get a full 'flavour' without making it too unmusical,... imagine a slow descending fuzzed up envelope filter that goes into an untrackable alternating octave/original note and then proceeds to break up like a gated fuzz and you have my settings,... if I try and tame it I always end up just having a boring sounding fuzz and I already have those :(

but so many sounds can be made out of that one little box,... just have to be very subtle as the attack on the strings can change everything...

BTW, thanks to all for your suggestions. Saw and heard a lot of coolness the last couple days. I think I'm just not ready for most of this stuff, though. I'd love a Pitch Factor, but for what I'd be able to do with it as a bassist, I think I'd be just as well served by a Whammy Pedal.

One thing I was pretty surprised about was that none of this stuff comes cheap. I thought for sure you guys would point me to something that I could use and was under $150. I guess I'm living in a dream world :bawl:

Anyway, lots of fun for the kids in this thread...not so much for the old farts. Nobody's looking for me to play industrial music or techno pop...that Slicer will have to wait ;)

Jimmy, not sure what the price of the prometheus is in USD but to me that would be the most versatile and usable envelope filter with add ons for someone that can fit it into their music...

The Prometheus is everything you've ever wanted in a filter pedal.

* Loads of headroom
* Reasonable size (measures about 3.7x4.7 inches)
* Highpass, Bandpass, and Lowpass filtering with adjustable intensity (resonance)
* Forward and reverse envelope following
* Sample/Hold step filtering based on 3 different wave forms.
* No special power supplies required. Operates with a single 9 volt battery or standard 9 volt adapter.

All that and it has some "hidden features" as well.

* The LFO rate can be adjusted to run much faster than the the step rate. This can be used to create very interesting arpeggiation.
* The Depth knob can push the filter cutoff frequency outside of the audio range. This can be useful to create a slow attack effect.
* The step rate can be turned up high enough for smooth modulation. This can be used to create and autofilter effect, that can sound similar to a phaser or tremolo.
* A fixed filter effect is possible by turning the depth knob down all the way, and using the Frequency knob to set the filter cutoff.

I had no use for it but somethings like the slow attack thing were cool,... used it in a downward mode so it descended into a very ultra low DUB type thing,... only thing I can think of is the start of 'shock' by fear factory just after he yells shock...

I didnt like the sample/hold step filtering thing,... just got really annoying after a while :(
