They are. I owned the MVP and it was spectacular. A tad on the heavy side but otherwise, absolutely fantastic.

One of the best for vintage vibe J is an Actual Fender J. The American Standard Jazz bass V is 34 inch scale and passive. So you get the low B and the proper scale length of a vintage Jazz bass. They sound great and can be had for around $1500 or a bit less. They have a solid low B as well. I wouldn't recommend active electronics if you really want vintage tone.

The Sadowsky, although an excellent instrument, doesn't really have much vintage vibe at all IMO and I personally don't like the tuners, the pickups or the general QC of the Fender American Pro series.
Personally I would probably consider a parts bass made from top quality parts, like Warmoth.

I'd add an Xotic. Nice woody tone and sound good passive too.

Check out the G&L J basses, about as vintage as you can get and the customization options are almost limitless.

I brought a new-to-me Lull P5 to a rehearsal and the BL said, "THAT is the bass that you need to play in this band!" The tone is just-right vintage P. (I had already tried maybe ten other basses (mostly active) as a tonequest and a "vibe-quest," and while all were good, none were quite right.)
Extrapolate as necessary for their Jazz models, and count me in as another +1 for a Lull.

Yeah. They’re all very nice and super lightweight. I almost bought that very bass 2 months ago, but decided to use a little self-control (never knew that existed… lol). Cool thing is, they just got back from the Dallas guitar show so they have a bunch in-stock right now. They really do a nice job.
My new Sandberg Superlight, TM5, (6.8lb) has impressed me more than any bass I’ve acquired in the last 20 years. The PLEK’ed neck is the bomb. In the running for best neck I’ve ever played. Period! Active AND Passive sound totally stellar thorough the Glockenklang Preamp. (Glock is renowned for their pristine sound) my bass is incredibly versatile, with a wide range of tones and styles easily found. Did I say Passive, yes passive sounds excellent

I own a Modern Vintage Jazz, based on a 1966 Fender Jazz. It's well made and has a number of vintage features -lollipop tuners, threaded steel bridge saddles, tug bar, neck pickup cover - as well as some nice modern features like Hipshot Ultralite tuners, roasted maple neck, easy access truss rod channel, and frets that are PLEKed.
