Help Me Pick

My local store has the Magellan 350/10-2 combo and a 12-3 cab. They sound good to me and I think I can get a discount if I buy it all together. That would give me some good options. My only concern is the 350 watt max output. Then again, I couldn't believe how much grunt the combo had when running at only 175 watts.

By the way, I use an EHX Battallion for overdrive, and a BP80 for the minimal effects I use.
You're on the right track with the 12-3 cab. If I were you I'd get 2 of those and a Magellan 800. That will sort you out for all but the largest venues (where you'd be hooked into the PA anyway). Genz builds a spectacular neo-driver speaker, and since you have the effects you'd like I would think you would want the hi-fi of a Genzler unit. I run his older Genz-Benz Shuttlemax 12.0 (600w x 2) and 2 of his neox 212s and they're reasonably light (I'm an older dude) and with even 1 I can keep up with most situations, with 2 I own the venue.

I'm just going to add that I FEEL the difference between 25 lbs. and 35 is more than a person would expect. I have a unpredictable neck thing that gives me horrible headaches when lifting sometimes, and my genzler ba110 is stupid light. I bought a Yamaha dxr10, and at just over 30lbs. , I don't want to carry it compared to the genzler. So for me, 25 or less is what is going to happen.
Revsound has several cabs less than 25lbs., there is the genzler at 21, and another I noticed that is stupid light is the Trace Elliot elf 110 that is 16lbs. I wish I could have listened to one to judge whether it would meet my needs. The aguilar sl112 is also right at 25lbs and you could even go with an audiokinesis (one might be enough) at 25lbs.

So, I'm kind of thinking a combo might be right for me for most shows. The Rumbles seem to be light and powerful, but, except for the Stage 800, I haven't heard much good about the tones. I only had a chance to play a 200, and it was ok. The Hartke HD500 seems interesting, but the 500 watt rating is peak. The weight and size appeal to me, though.

I've never heard PJB stuff. Is the voodoo real? Are they varsatile?

Although I was steered away from their stuff earlier in the thread, Markbass still intrigues me. They are ugly, but I can work around that.

What am I missing?

I've had markbass, and it is fairly light, and sounds pretty good, but I didn't realize how expensive it is until I was shopping lately. There's a lot of stuff for similar money, so I think that's why a lot of people have a hard time with it. There is stuff that performs just as well or better that isn't ugly. Some of it is probably cheaper too. Nothing wrong with it, just a lot of other stuff out there. I think it is reliable too, so that's a plus. And you can hear it at guitar center.

As far as pjb, I haven't heard it, but I've also wondered about it. I wonder if it is just really expensive for what you get? I don't know. I'd like to try the c4 neo cabs. They seem similar to the genzler ba110 with more low end extension, probably not as good dispersion, and a little heavier. And more expensive. I bet they are nice though.

Thanks for the reply. The problem I have is that I only have access to one local store. I'd love to buy from them because there aren't many independent stores left. They carry Fender, Bergantino, Ampeg, Genzler, Hartke, and Blackstar. They can probably order others.

Like I said, I'd love to buy from them, but, I will order something if I have to go beyond what they carry. The closest large chain is about 200 miles away.

I still have my larger rigs if I need them.

I hate to say it, but the only thing I've ever found helpful in choosing equipment is gigging with it. Looking at the churn around here might suggest others find the same ;-)

I bet most of the stuff you've listed would be pretty good, so maybe just focus on the one thing you think is most important, and buy what does that best. Like, it sounded like weight was important to you, so I bet if you got the lightest thing you've considered, it would work pretty well.

I've actually been trying to figure my stuff out for a few years, and still wonder what the frick I'm doing :)

Good point. I'm kinda hoping someone throws out a name I hadn't heard of or considered

I'm gigging two 115s now and love how they sound. Even though they are extension cabs, I'd still like less weight and space. I have M.S., have broken my back in five places, and my neck twice.
Sounds like you could easily get away with a Rumble 500 head with a couple 115 extension cabs. Very light, very loud, and a beautiful warm tone. You can run it through the PA if needed and move them around easily. Plus you can spend the extra money you have left over and take your wife out to dinner. You'll save money, get new gear, and be the hero...for a couple hours anyway.

I ended up with a Genzler Magellan 800 and two of the 12-3 cabs. The local store knew I was looking and called as soon as the rig came in on consignment.

Got it all for $1400.
