Help me with a new Genz Benz Rig

I look at it like this! I have a 212T Neox which is way more than is needed in many settings, but I am going to order a 112T Neox to sit on top of the 212T Neox in some situations. As far as portability is concerned the 212T neox is 50lbs and don't feel like it. The 112T Neox is 37lbs, so for 13lbs + rollback wheels Vs. a handle on top of a 112T, my first choice if I had neither would be the 212T Neox which is obviously the way I went. No regrets at all! With the top handles on the 212T Neox, it is easy for me to load either in the trunk or back seat of my Taurus. I also went with the 12.0 which is overkill, but not for the price difference. Just my opinion! ;)

Resurrection - I need to think out loud again...

I have been playing my 3.0 Combo with the 1x10 extension. It sounds good. So much so that I can see myself bringing the extension to all my gigs - not so much for volume but tone. I spent some time with the 9.0 and Max 12 into a STL112 (not a NeoX) at the store. I think I prefer the Max 12 over the 9.0 - the 2 channel thing.

So, if I'm going to haul the extension cab all the time does it not make sense to just get a 112 cab and bring just one cab to a gig instead of two?

I can trade my 3.0 combo and 1x10 extension - plus $500 - in on the Max 12 and STL112 cab. I know the STL112 isn't quite up to the NeoX112 standards, but it sounds really good, and the light/smaller thing is always in play for me.

I have 2 gigs this week so I may if they'll let me take the Max12/112 out for some A/B comparing and see if it sounds $500 better than my mini stack. The two cab thing isn't that big a deal when they're each basically 16 pounds and 12" square.

Small and light works best for me. I played the 6.0 - 12T combination at a gig in a local music store (I'm sure you saw my posts in another thread). The 12T has a lot of punch, and I decided to get a pair of them with the 6.0. I'm not a high volume player, but I can't imagine any gig I'll fact that can't be handled with a pair of 12T speakers. I didn't A/B the NEOX-112T with them, as my ears told me I was home and portability is important. There's a 20-pound difference between a pair of 12Ts and NEOX-112T speakers (10 lbs/speaker), which makes some difference.

I figure if the venue is big enough that I can't address it with a pair of 12T speakers, they'll have a PA system with low end capability.

Yeah, I agree. I have been covering my gigs with a 1x10 so I know a 1x12 would be enough. Everything else has PA support.

The other thing for me is that unless you go post EQ, the FOH doesn't get the benefit of the preamps - like the tube. I don't like to go post EQ as it messes up my ability to change my eq on stage without messing up the FOH mix.

I don't know why the pre EQ can't go through the preamp first so you can get your tube grit through the FOH without EQ messing it up.

I have used Pods and with them you do get the model sent to FOH and your stage amp and you can still mess with your stage amp eq. I am tempted to try that again as well. I know some hate Pods but I have goen lots of comments when I used them - like best bass rig I have heard.

I don't know....

I'm going to take my mini stack (Shuttle 3.0-10T comb/1x10 extension cab) and the Max 12/112 cab to the gig tonight, set them up side by side and use one per set and let the better rig win...the loser will go back to the store.

Although the Uber 212 is a killer cab, it's just too big for my gigs, and while the Max 12 is really overkill as well, I think it's justifiable for the two channel option and extensive EQ.

The Max 12 and ST112 sounded great. Not that it was that much better than the 3.0-10T/110 stack, just different - in a good way of course. The versatility of the Max with 2 channels is tough to beat. I think I have a new amp. The best part is it's probably more portable than the little combo and extension cab.

Update:

I bought the Max 12 and Shuttle 112 cab. I have gigged it in all but one of my bands and it is fantastic. I think I have found the proverbial "tone-in-my-head" with this rig. I did a jazz trio for a fancy reception last night (easy background music) and a quintet gig (fairly loud with no PA) and played it in church today with PA. The FOH sounded so good - as did my amp as a monitor on stage. I leave my Sadowsky and Max 12 basically flat and the sound is incredible.

I've said it before (as we all have) but this may be the set up for me. Great playing bass, great sounding bass and amp, looks good, easy to move, loud, great DI. What else could I need?

Thanks for the great thread Steve and congrat's the finding the sound and rig you wanted. I'm searching for basically the same thing, moving up from a great small rig to something bigger.
Question: Is the Max 12 too much for the single shuttle 112 cab? What volume are you running it at? Thanks, Dan

No not at all. The Max12 is only 375 watts per side at 8 ohms.

The Max 12/STL112 sounds great. But, tonight my buddy brought an Avalon U5 to rehearsal. I ran it through the Master Effects Return to see hoiw it compared to the Max 12. Boy, it sounded nice. Not that the Max 12 isn't fantastic, but there's a reason I've had an Avalon U5 in the past.

Never mind. I love the Max 12/Shuttle 112. The Avalon adds something but I don't know if anyone but me and a couple guys in the band would really know or care and it's a large and expensive piece of gear to haul around.

I need to just be happy with the great sounding rig I have. Time to stop chasing...

Hi Steve, I don't want to hijack your thread here, but you are the man to talk to. I'm usually playing low volume gigs with friends: a couple of acoustic or electric guitars, djembe or tabla. People are singing usually without a PA so they set the highest volume and you must stay under it. I don't want to bring too much amp to this gig and have to run my volumes on amp and bass super low. Kind of like bringing a 100W Marshall stack to the gig, it's just too much. I'm looking at a shuttle 6 with the 12T or maybe the shuttle max 6 and a 12T or the Neox 112, depending on what comes my way on the Talkbass classifieds. I like the idea of the 2 channels with the max, and the simplicity of the shuttle 6. Thanks, Dan
