Help please!!!

Yamaha, Sire, Ibanez, are really good choices. If you want a bass that will go with any style I would go with something with a P pickup in it. My first bass was a cheap P bass and served me well till I had the cash for a better bass. Usually the Ray4 is a good bass from what I hear. I own a SB14 ( which is awesome ) and had a Ray34 for a while but sold it only because I didn’t like the wide neck and wanted more low mids and the Sterling by MusicMan SB14 has a bit more growl for “me”. I also owned a L2500 by G&L that was a real play but again the tone just wasn’t for me. Lots of good advice above. Just keep dealing with places that have a good exchange policy so you can play it for a few days. Best of luck going forward, keep us posted!

I'm gonna go for the sterling stingray short scale. Just hope it works out. It has one humbucker. Hope it has a deep tone cause thats what I would like to have.

I looked at a bc rich warlock but the reviews weren't all that good.

P.S. the warlock was used and didn't know the age of it. Had chips in the paint also had a jackson JS3. Asking the same as a new one on the jackson but it was in really great shape

I agree with this.
I've been playing my Stingray and Peavey Fury (my defacto P bass style bass). Both do have low tones but in different ways, the Stingray pickup has that aggressive gravely low, the P has a mellower more natural sounding low. For reference, the Stingray I have is a passive US Musicman SUB Ray so even though it's passive, it's still got that Ray bite to it. You can't really go wrong with either though.

This is my "P bass" which is in actuality a Peavey Fury bass I picked up for $100. Just wanted to show you that it cuts through even in a crappy phone video recording.


This is my passive Musicman SUB Ray which being passive might sound a little similar to the Sterling Ray short scale.
I know different kind of music altogether but same crappy kind of recording I do for a tone test and it still cuts through.

Any new bass should come set up properly. Then youtube setups, strings, etc and do it yourself as needed over time. You could set up the one you have now. Your taste in instruments will change as you progress as a player and any instrument will still sound like you. I've played and own some pretty rocking cheapies.

Plus over time as you become proficient at setups or even just have the understanding of what a setup can do, you'll be able to look at a bass and see what it might need to be a better player for you and when to leave a bass alone as it will not work for you no matter the setup.

I agree and also with an earlier comment about having a point of reference in terms of a properly set up bass and how it can play. I bought a bass from a guy who for a couple of years was playing a bass that was set up horrendously or maybe it wasn't even set up to begin with. The strings were so far from the fretboard and there was a considerable bow on the neck. Not surprising, he found it difficult to fret a note on the bass. I pointed out to him that with a proper set up, the bass could be made considerably more playable and even offered to show him how to do it, but he had such a bad experience he just wanted to give up and sell it.

Well I ordered a sterling stingray short scale. It has a 45 day return. No questions asked. From all the reviews I read not many since it is new, I will take a chance. Zzound had them in stock.
P.S. old woman said as soon as I learn more than 3 songs I could upgrade. LOL. Now have to find a real easy song. I can't read music so I have to hear the song to learn it. She can read music so maybe one day she will teach me.

Congratulations on your upcoming bass. I've yet to try one of these short scale Rays as I've yet to see them in my local stores but from what I hear, they're good basses. Regarding reading music, I actually learned to play pretty much by ear, even though I later learned to read music much later on, I usually don't, I prefer to listen and play.
