HELP! Purchased bass from GC that was mislabled

Yeah I was totally thrown off by the logos... I'm not familiar at all with Cort and I only knew that Elrick makes great basses... their logos (especially since they are 2 different companies who work together on a bass) are strikingly similar.

I actually returned the bass and found out that it fooled the GC staff too. They WAY overpaid the guy who brought it in initially and they're gonna have to swallow the loss.

It's a great bass though... I told them that if they can determine a fair price to sell it for to let me know.

Just take it back; tell them that it's a licensed copy of an Elrick, not the real thing; and ask for your money back. Given the pretty ridiculous similarity of the Cort/Elrick logos, they can certainly hide behind the "honest error" excuse. And, after you have your money back, what happens to/with the bass is GC's problem, not yours...

Done and Done.

Return the instrument, you do not need to say a reason of return, and since the bass has an "e" logo it is arguably an ELRICK.
Just take it in and say your wife will divorce you for buying the bass.....or say nothing, GC is good at returns and great at not knowing what they sell

Actually, it's not an "e"... it's a "c" for Cort.

Pretty confusing when you aren't too familiar with either brand.

Hey guys, so I think I screwed up yesterday.

I found a used Elrick Expat bass at Guitar Center that I really liked. I'm not familiar with the brand but I trusted the GC labeling.

Turns out, it is not an Elrick but a Cort replica.

I'm having trouble finding info on this particular bass, can anyone help me identify what I actually have?

And if it is NOT an Elrick, what is the actual value?

IT is not a USA Elrick. It is a Cort JP5 licensed by Elrick. Original street price right at $800. The JP5 has become a rare bird however. But imo not $1400 rare.

Given the above post (street price originally $800), since you really like the bass (and I concur, love transparent green funk machines), I'd make an offer around 5-600, and get the difference in a refund.
Make sure you point out the pickups have been changed, and the originals were Bartolinis (even though only MK1's).

If you were trying to sell one to GC what would they offer you for it? Probably a 1/3 to 1/2 wht they would sell it for, right? That should help figure out how GC should compensate the OP for their (possibly cleverly disguised) error.

So Cort basically ripped off a signature model & started making them on the side.

They worked with Rob Elrick on that model. Very nice bass (I once owned 2 of them--- used for about $500 each). "Real" Elricks are the bomb--I currently own one--(once owned 2).

Just return it to your local GC. They have an easy return policy, and the fact that they sold it as something it's not means you should get all of your money back.

and it's easy enough to get the trolley down to Tijuana

However, I wouldn't wear a sport logo in an ad for something completely unrelated, but our man Steve Harris likes to promote a football team on his bass.

As a lifelong resident I ask the same question.

Born and raised in La Mesa here. Went to Helix High way back long time ago. My only real problem with SD was the Chargers could not win a championship. For me going all the way back to the Dan Fouts era.

Actually Guitar center tends to offer about 70% of whatever the going Ebay prices are. I hate this approach, because using Ebay as a price point totally discounts the value of being able to try it first. But that's what my guy told me when I tried to trade one of mine in and I watched him go to Ebay to get a price.

If there is nothing on Ebay, I don't know what they do, but used gear tends to go for about 50% of new around here. So anything more than $400 is a possible overpay. Of course this doesn't account for items that are rare or hard to find.

It honestly looks like those generic, unshaped paddle headstocks on $39.00 necks on ebay.

Maybe it was for his side project Suicidal Dentistries? A thrash band about the importance of good dental hygiene.
