High End Bass Recommendation

Besdies his Double cut and single cut customs, Kevin Brubaker makes a killer version of a jazz bass. You would not be doing your due diligence without checking out one of these.

I'll second spade2you and smperry in saying that if you can pin down more details of what you want you'll get better advice.

I've played a lot of the basses mentioned in this thread (probably 2/3 or so) and the worst thing I can say about the vast majority of them is that they weren't necessarily for me.

Personally I only want instruments from Alan at ACG and Chris at Stambaugh designs but that's simply because they fit what I want and your requirements may be very different.

In fact, as much as I recommend Chris, I think he can be a risky choice if you are iffy about what you want because he really will build anything. On the other hand, if you KNOW what you want and can either spec out the bass or convey it to him and let him guide you, you'll get a great bass.

ACGs on the other hand are a different animal. Incredible woods, amazing craftsmanship and and a custom preamp that is flat out amazing and a departure from the norm.

If either of these guys fit what you want I can't recommend them highly enough.

Here's Alan's site:

And there's a link to a gallery of Chris' work in my signature.

He also happened to send me pictures of my upcoming fivers today too:

I dont think fodera, warwick, and spector are improved fender. at least warwick n spector should never be called improved fender imho.

So which part do you have a problem with, the 'improved', or the 'Fender'?:D

I do very clearly see a P in the spector shape. Not sure of the reversed P pickup is an 'improvement' as such but it certainly was a new touch, when spector introduced it.

Speaking of Wals, is the currency conversion still crap? I recall the new ones being a tad expensive, but the currency exchange made them a little tough to afford at the moment.

Depends which side of the Atlantic you're on!

$1.60 to the £, which is about what I guessed it would be. Wal state £3,650 as their starting price so some simple maths would put that out of range.

Yup, that means they're starting out at $5,900, plus shipping. I'm more than willing to pay good money for a nice instrument, but not due to an unfavorable exchange rate.

Hey guys I have cut down on my list and looking at Tom clement, stambaugh, le compte, and Brubaker brute single cut headless( ok this may not be high end) but I just love the look at it :) ) will post on my final decision :)

Oops forget to add CB to the list.

That's actually a VERY favorable exchange rate for us in the States. Other than around 1985 (when the dollar and pound were briefly almost equal) the pound has been higher than it's current rate. As recently as 2007 or so it was much closer to a 2:1 exchange rate.

Wals are simply expensive, regardless of where you live.

Good to know. I thought I heard it increased in recent years, but obviously don't follow the exchange rate closely. Perhaps I'll hafta start budgeting for one and just bite the bullet.

If you get a Tom Clement or a Stambaugh, you could probably still afford the Brute SC headless.
